If you were to create a religion based on the Pogues…

Post Wed Mar 28, 2007 4:13 pm

...what would its tenets be?

In preparation for writing a final paper about the First Church of Elvis Presley in a philosophy of religion class in which I am currently enrolled, we are currently writing a shorter paper in which we make up our own religion and describe its orthodoxy. The goal is not to be rational or justified in any real way but, rather, to be internally consistent with our views.

So I’d like to know, in your opinion, if a theoretical religion were based upon the Pogues:

1.) What would its main tenets be?
2.) What would its main practices be?
3.) How would it respond to conflicting claims from other hypothetical religions? (For example, how would it respond to the claim that Elvis is a far better musician than the Pogues collectively?)

We all know that such an idea as this is absurd in reality, so please, address it lightly and with a sense of humor.

Thanks.

Well, at least it's already got its own logo:

But would the Pogues themselves be a pantheon of gods or prophets of another god?

1. Avoid religion at all costs, it is a force of the Devil.
2. Avoid religion at all costs, it is a force of the Devil.
3. We accept all conflicting claims as "possibles", given that we ourselves offer no "probables". But Elvis was definitely a force of the Devil, God bless him.

See, AllBusiness37, you can now even quote an original saying of one of that religion's worshipped.

Indeed, if that isn't a religiously-sanctioned decree, I don't know what is.

I'm pretty sure the communion ceremony would involve more than one sip of watered-down wine and a wafer. Whiskey for all true believers!

I'd guess it would be kinda like Catholicism, very Irish and alcoholic, only with less focus on the bread and more on the wine, and without the whole rules business.

An important component would be the sermon's. The chief messenger of the religion (and most likely first martyr to the cause) would mumble the divine wisdom but unfortunately unintelligibly. One of the sanctified inner circle would then have to translate to the masses what was actually meant. This is, of course, absolutely the same as in all other religions.

The church in my eyes:

T-shirts stating "Shane saves (his empties)" and "What would Spider do (without ProEvo on Playstation)?"

The Colbert report is the psalms.

Johnny Depp, Dermot Mulroney, Joey Cashman, Ronnie Drew, Tom McManamon and DzM are the Popes.

Joey and Victoria take turns translating Shane's sermons.

Every Mass is four hours long, two of which are Shane singing, one with Phil/Spider/Andrew/Terry alternating songs and the final hour featuring friends' stories about the old times.

Every guy goes to the track on Christmas Eve, hits big on the last race and chugs a fifth of Jameson before waking up just as he's escorted to in a cell by Matt Dillon in police blues. Then they face the wife...

The accordion players are the coolest kid on the block!!!

And most important of all ... Medusians go door to door in skull and crossbones "Boys from the County Hell" t-shirts spreading the good word.

And the number 15 would have to have some special significance. March AND December would be sacred months. Millions would shave their heads. Millions would also quit the drink, yet continue in the faith. People would wear hats more, and dress a little nicer.

7 more points and you've got your Ten Commandments there!! In keeping with modern society, written not on stone tablets but on a computer keyboard. I presume.
