I always had the impression that at least some of the original members were bored with the format, frustrated with the level of label support (or lack of) for both the
Waiting for Herb and the
Pogue Mahone releases, the incessant touring, and the slowly shrinking crowds and venues.
Ultimately I think the original members remaining (Spider, Adnrew, and an honorary mention for Daryl) after Jem's decision to leave decided that there was little point in calling themselves "The Pogues" any longer, and they all might-as-well see what else the world had to offer.
But this is largely speculation drawn from a lot of interviews given over the years. I speak for nobody, blah blah blah.
