The Orpheum Tonight

"robbing yourself of the memory of some beautiful renditions of some beautiful songs."

i prefer my memories of a happier shane....singing the songs with a passion...

instead of with a whiskey bottle...a cup of beer...and one with some wine for good neasure!...and then passing out/ falling...mumbling thru songs...and totally scrwing others up....

althoug i did rob myself of witnessing a great talent...slowly committing suicide in front of my own eyes.... yet others are enjoying it!

Even IF Shane was smashed, there is more to the band than just him. The rest of the chaps played brilliantly, and even though Shane fucked up the songs, he was jovial, still had great jokes and was quick with something to say. It's a contradiction I always find interesting.

Daryl with the two whistles at the end was hilarious, and James really got into it, jumping off Andrew's platform several times. I thought the crowd was interesting. Not a chanting frenzied mob, but a respectful crowd that seemed really into the music. Great show overall!

but thats one of the reasons i was disgusted.... they deserved better....

and to me ...it surely looked like ( to me!!) that they were quite pissed off...and / or embarrased by how PISSED DRUNK Shane was....

Wrong. Shane was not "pissed drunk". Like the rest of us he was a bit frazzled after 5 straight high octane shows in a row. In theatre, understudies go on when this happens. In Sport, you look to the subs bench. In Music, you get out there, deliver the best you're able to and hope that some sort of transcendent magic arrives at some point to lift you up from the limitations of your mortal coil. Is this your third post on the topic? Good, you'll pardon me if I stop reading them now.

Ive just watched Fiesta on You Tube at the Orpheum, sorry "disgusted" what was the problem? that was superb!!!. You,ve lost me!!!!!

I have to agree with Philip, here. During the show I was sitting 3rd row directly in front of Spider. In between songs I screamed out "SPIIIDAAAHHH" much like Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lang screams out "FIIIRRREE" after eight or nine Jack n' waters. Shane coherently picked up on it and called me something unintelligable. It was a proud moment.
I later shouted out to Shane that "the Doctor" was having a fine night. I just blurted it out with no rhyme or reason as to my choice of words. He quickly looked at me and pushed his hand over his head twice. It was the same "Miracle Ear" gesture which he probably gets all the time. "What'd he say?"

By the way, Spider, endless thanks for the tip of the cap!!!
You guys are all gentlemen and I'm happy to spend my hard earned cash to see you perform - or at least as much dinero as my beautiful wife will allow.
I'll be raiding Cinderblock when I get my tax returns.

I was wondering why Shane was limping. Did he fall? How'd it happen? I didn't see it. Sorry if this has already been answered, but I couldn't find an explanation.

As far as i understand it, and I am still new at this Fora malarky, they exist as a place to share opinions on all things Pogue related. Mr 'Disgusted' may have some valid points, I was not there, I am a victim of geography in this case, but the way you construct an argument leaves much to be desired, apart from some loose arguments you give no particualr explanation as to why you are so 'disgusted'.

Obviously, this person has an ax to grind. A few points and observations
from a long time fan.

Wasn't Shane drunk back in the day, too?

My friend and I saw Saturday's show from different vantage points-
we didn't meet up, so we talked about it at work Monday. Again, we felt
Shane looked and sounded better than ever. From my vantage point
I thought Shane wasn't drinking, he had a cup of clear liquid and then
a bottle of wine (that was hardly touched). I thought the opposite, that
he wasn't drinking , just poking fun and/or living up to his image.
I mean I was pretty sore and tired Sunday after the show, I couldn't imagine doing it again Sunday night (let alone performing a sixth show
in seven nights).

When I saw Shane and the Popes in May 2002 at the Boston Paradise,
I did have some questions about him. He was hours late on stage, the
Popes were losing members and were falling apart. It was the worst
I had seen him live and I questioned whether it was worth it. He
ended up cancelling a lot of shows on that tour. Fortunately, the reunion
shows have all been done well, so I went last year and was thrilled.
This year, Shane was better than ever.

I was at Friday and Sundays show.. Thoroughly enjoyed both. When I decided to go to the shows and purchase a ticket I knew what to expect for the most part. I hadn't read anywhere on seen anything saying that Shane had given up the drink etc.. So there was no surprise for me which would have made me want to walk out. to each his own and I respect the dudes opinions and thoughts.., but for me I got my moneys worth. The band was awsome and Shane gave us his all.. I am not there to judge ....but I was there to enjoy great music by a great band..

Yeah, low you expectations and you'll keep being pleasantly surprised mostly.

That was one positive thing about the Popes gigs - your expectations were so low (you counted on cancellation) that ANY show was a pleasant surprise.
