Cork-born singer and songwriter Ron Kavana has been working for over six years on this magnum opus – a four-CD box with an accompanying 122-page book that sets out to tell in traditional and original music, poetry and narration the story of Ireland and its people, from prehistory to the present. He’s got a host of terrific guests with him, including such notables as Paddy Keenan, Shane McGowan, Terry Woods, Niamh Parsons, Gino Lupari and a couple of dozen more. Unfortunately, in the absence of credits for individual tracks, the punter is left to play a guessing game as to who’s doing what where. That caveat aside, Kavana’s monumental project more than succeeds in its ambitious aims.

Ron Kavana rarely does things by halves, whether delving into the Topic archives, cursing Cromwell with the Pogues or gleefully craic-ing a Jagger/Richards classic. Even by his Renaissance man standards, Irish Ways must have been a huge undertaking.
Anticipating criticism, he admits he's no historian but quotes sources as diverse as Nikolai Gogol and Victor Jara in his assertion that traditional song is the most accurate and illuminating repository of the past. He may just be right, and even if many of his carefully researched adaptations are correspondingly tragic in tone – and necessarily partisan, the story is arguably at its most gripping on blood-quickening battle cries like Follow Me up to Carlow. Figures such as Henry VIII make convenient targets for some diversionary humour.

In essence though, Kavana tackles Ireland's tortured past – Praties is truly haunting – in the hope of a more peaceful, more just future.............." end quote

From listenling to the samples it sounds like most of the songs are new recordings. But a few sound exactly like from the "1798-1998 Irish Songs of Rebellion"

Why would you not put info about who played what songs? And how many songs from this collection are also on Irish Songs of Rebellion Resistance and Reconciliation as well? Is ISoRaR worth picking up as well? (Seems Amazon has a deal if you get both, being in the States, they might be my only option.)

I recieved that Box-set few days ago. It looks great, but I was a bit disapointed, because I expected more songs. There's mainly irish histroy and poetry recited by Kavana.
A lot of the songs are acapella. Another minus is that many songs are copied from his album "1798-1998 - Irish Songs, Tunes and Speech of Rebellion....." or from other albums. The history which Kavana reads on the disks is also included in a 120-page-book, his speech is backed by lovely tunes, some of them are also from previous albums.
It's not quite what i expected, but it's still nice. But instead of buying this here, I'd recommend you to buy the "1798-1998" album and all the other albums ever released by Mr Kavana.

I really hate that album. Irish Songs of Rebellion Resistance and Reconciliation was shit, in my opinion. Passionlessly sang, songs too drawn out, crappy instrumentation. It's a real museum piece, with great songs made into exercises of ... something that has nothing do with what makes folk music great. I thought Kavana's version of Kitty was at least passable for a while, because it's a song that stands up to being made slow, dreamy and reverent but repeat listens show it's a fucking shitter compared to the Pogues's version. Do yourself a favour and get the Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers's versions of these songs. Fuck it, get the Dropkick Murphys versions if you can't track down Luke or Liam, at least they sound alive
