If you call your computer company, you will be forwarded to India where they speak little bit of English, if any. My manual says just reboot the damn thing and start over. It's so easy, a caveman can do it.

Well, Bud, it was me, too, but I wasn't around to tell you so and now I have followed the amazing DzM's instructions to remove the corruption and all is well!! Thanks, DzM!!

Thanks DzM! The lag that I was noticing has been gone for a few days. :D Y'know, its amazing how far computing and network speed have improved and what we now call "slow". A few years ago that lag would have been the norm for my machine/network connection. I now get my phone, TV, and internet all over the same fiber, and from the same company. I can do all three at the same time with no noticeable change. Now I'm bragging.... :)

If you listen carefully you can hear the sound of spanners spanning, hammers hammering, screwdrivers screwdrivering. You're better off not paying attention.

Erm, I've been trying to get into the forum for the last fifteen minutes, just managed it now.

I managed to get onto the front page, but when I came to load the forum I kept getting the 'cannot find server' message.

Just thought you should know.

So here's what changed recently:

1) Upgraded to a new version of the web server
2) Upgraded to a new version of the database server
3) Upgraded to a new version of phpBB, the forum software
4) Added Yet More Spam Prevention
5) Upgraded to a new version of PHP

Unfortunately this has not been an entirely smooth transition for all the affected parts. yesterday, in particular, had a lot of snags. Sorry about that.

Anyway - things seem to be working pretty smoothly for me. I trust you will all let me know if this is not the case (Yes, I do know that you were all forced to log in again. Sorry. That was unavoidable.).

What? Down again?

Post Sat Dec 08, 2007 1:36 am

You may have heard me mumble this a few days ago, but here it is all Official-like:

The machine that Medusa lives on has been evicted from it's home of the last two years. This makes me sad, but it's not the end of the world.

Gir (the machine) is moving from its current home to its new home on Sunday, December 9, Pacific Standard Time. Somewhere between morning and early afternoon. This means that for a ~six-hour period (probably around 10:00PST through 16:00PST) Gir will be completely unreachable and Medusa will for all meanings of the phrase be "off-line."

Once Gir/Medusa comes back online some of you may be unable to reach her for up to 48 hours or longer while her cached DNS records get flushed and refreshed with non-stale data (that's geek talk that I just made up). If this happens to you, please rest assured that she will be back before too long and that being patient will reward you in the long run. During the outage I recommend getting outside and trying to determine what the bright thing in the sky is. Don't look at it with binoculars though.

The new home for Gir has a smaller network connection than it currently enjoys. This may eventually be a deal breaker, but for now I'm willing to give it a try.

You might discover who you're married to.
Your employer might discover that you exist and that you could actually produce some work! Industrial tribunals beckon...

Let's just hope DzM gets us back onto our raft soon. Thanks.
(I'd rather not refer to you as captain, seeing what a rat Medusa's captain was. You wouldn't do a thing like that.)

I'd push you into the shark filled waters personally if it meant an extra half-cup of fresh water for myself.

...

Umm.

I mean - No way. I always have your best interests at heart.

You better be careful what you say, Captain Bligh.
“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.
