BOX SET - FINAL APPEAL

Post Wed Jan 31, 2007 5:19 pm

Well, the fabled box set creeps ever closer, it seems. Myself, Spider and Darryl had a meeting with The Man From Rhino UK last week and they are keen to get it moving now. Some Medusans (who shall remain anonymous until they get their thanks credit in the booklet) have sent me some useful material for possible inclusion. In some cases, where the quality is questionable, we have found better copies of this material, but not always. We are still on the trail of some of the master tapes and, as with the 2004 (UK), 2005 (Japan) and 2006 (US) remasters, we want to find the best possible sources for everything. Not everything we did was catalogued and archived properly when we made it, especially demos, as our workrate was so frantic at the time. Things like demos (especially when they turn out to be the only recording of a song we ever made), are just tools of the trade when you make them, not yet pieces of your history.

There are still some gaps we need to fill. We would especially welcome good quality tapes or CDRs of Hot Asphalt / Donegal Express / The Travelling People / Fishermen / Glued Up And Speeding. Please PM me if you can help, no questions asked. This should not be taken as a guarantee that any of these songs will make it to the box set - it really does depend on how we now evaluate the performances and also whether we can find sources which do them justice. Just one more thing: if you do have anything you can offer to us, please don't ask me to trade it for some other rarity you don't have. I am not at liberty to make so free with my fellow Pogues' work even if I wanted to. Anything you can offer us will be received in the spirit that you, and we, hope to make the Pogues box set the very best it can be.

This is likely to be the last appeal for material, as Mr Rhino tells us he needs to have our completed project by late July/early August.

Thanks.

Mr. Chevron see if you can include the rare Falconer Demos, i.e. Lust For Vomit, NW3, Murder Ska, etc. Also rare live tracks, The Body of an American, Dirty Old Town, and The Sickbed of Cuchulainn from the Self Aid show in Dublin 1986. Or how about the early demos of the Auld Triangle, radio sessions of Greenland Whale Fisheries and Streams of Whiskey. Songs from LILT Album, Irish Ways, For the Children, Johnny, Child of Ulster. Also, how about the infamous The Bailinee instrumental.

"The Balinalee" is likely to make it if we can find a copy of The Pogues At Abbey Road ["The Terry Woods Solo Album"] that we're happy with. Same goes for Falconer and Firehouse demos. I don't have an early demo of "Auld Triangle" on my master list. Where is this from? Do you have it? LILT is not really a Pogues project, though there are Pogues involved of course [not to mention a very naughty first pressing which tried to pass the whole thing off as a new album by The Pogues, not L.I.L.T.] We have asked the BBC to open their archive to us and we have made no final decision about including live tracks.

Incidentally, we did a second, very different recording of "Murder Ska" for Hell's Ditch, and I can never decide which is best. Perhaps we'll include both.

Someone on Ebay was selling three rare Pogues B-Sides and Singles albums, I don't buy anything off ebay, just don't trust them, I know its sounds rather naive. But, no I don't have any copies of demos of The Auld Triangle. I do however, have the songs from the LILT album, well most of them.

That package turns up on eBay quite a bit. I have never tried to block it, as I'm pretty sure it will be obsolete quite soon. Already most of it is available on the remastered CDs of the 7 albums.

This is blowing my mind. I've never heard of most of these songs. Please give the man whatever he wants so that I can buy this for my greedy little self very soon.

Time to start saving up methinks. Do we have any idea how many discs this boxset will include? Just wondering how much material is being mooted for inclusion.

There will be either 3 or 4 discs. We'll be trying to keep the price down.

As long as the quality is decent enough that you're not ashamed, throw it in! We'll buy it.

Cool, and a good idea. Some boxsets can be prohibitively expensive, as I am sure you are well aware!

I wanted the Richard Thompson one ("RT") that came out last year but it was nearly £50... the ensuing divorce would have cost me even more...!

Anyway, I look forward to this one.

We find ourselves to be quite admiring of recent box sets by The Faces and Paul Weller, even Cousin Tom Waits, which are really, more accurately, booklet sets and can slot in alongside your DVDs on the shelf. More importantly, they are well-priced, in the case of the first two, at least.

So will it have all the bonus tracks that are on the re-mastered albums as well as the rarer stuff?

No previously released tracks except possibly "In and Out", "Got A Lotta Livin' To Do", "Haunted", that kinda thing. Stuff that did not directly relate to or connect with the 7 studio albums and Straight To Hell.

For the foreseeable future, the remastered CDs are the standard versions, so it is unlikely the bonus tracks will be collected together anytime soon.
