So which part of the song is Spider then?

Well, I'd got the idea that the "soldier" voice on the song on Rum, Sodomy might be Spider. Partly because it sounds like it could be, partly because of the smooth and swift change between the voices in the song, sung in three different registers. But then when I listened to it again last night I thought it may well be all Shane after all... so now I just don't know!

Not 'whistle-player' but I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Shane sings all the parts in Gentleman Soldier.

Thanks, James, for clearing that up! The range of voices he uses in the song is indeed impressive. :)

you don't have to record all of the vocals in one take. you can split it up and shit.

it's definetly all shane on the song. without a doubt.

it's not him, of course, on Jesse James

someone told me that was Terry Woods.

compare to fiesta shane's line "would you kindly kill that doll for me"

pretty versatile in his characterizations?

I believe it's Spider singing Jesse James.

gentleman soldier...

listen carefully to the line

"two wives are allowed in the army, but one's too many for me"
it's never been more clearly Shane singing then it is right there. towards the end of the line, he kinda slides out of his "soldier voice" too smoothly.

listen listen! do it. "many for me" hear it? totally Shane

great line, he gets away with a lot of writing by being irish.

i could never say

"knocked me arse over tits"

great line, of course. but...he gets to use a lot more stuff than i get to use being from Jersey. i would sound like an idiot saying "must be on me way" i've a lot of irish in me, but not enough me in ireland.

i've always prided myself on knowing, and appreciating songwriters...somehow, i made it through 21 years of my life before even knowing about Shane. wasted years.

today u cant say anything freely without offending some1 if it's racialy nationaly wotever, but thats y people love shane even now.

when i saw shane on paddys day he slagged every race, colour religon and ethic group (apart from the irish of-course)off it just freedom of speech man as legend, us meer mortals don't come close.

how can you call yourself a Pogues fan and not be able to distinguish between Shane and Spider? Do you sometimes confuse A Pair of Brown Eyes with the immortal How Come?
