I was told by Shane his Mother's Maiden name is Lynch.

Look, Andy! I am not going to argue with Shane about his mother's name. But here is how I see it (from books and interviews):
Name of her father (Shane's granddad) and her's therefore was Cahill. Lynch is her mother's (Shane's grandma's) name. Therese's father died when she was three, so her mother with children (Therese and Sean, Shane's uncle in future) came back to her family, the Lynches. And Therese grew up in her grand-parents' (Shane's grand grand-parent's) farmhouse, among Lynches. That's where Lynch version could come from. Just take it or leave it...

Same farmhouse and same family where Shane himself was growing up. IRA safe house and so on...
So his admiration for Lynch name is quite understandable.

I too thought I had heard from Shane himself that it was Lynch. Yet, in an encounter with an older Tipperary native ayear earlier who has known the family for decades, said to me, "Shane will never admit this but his ancestors are really Smiths."

He usually is. Hey Noel, if I were to send you some Australian wine, would you be open to forwarding it to Mr. MacG when you next see him? By way of a bribe you see....

Whenever Shane talks about the old days, the name Lynch comes up more often than Cahill. "like Gerry Lynch he's drunk in the bar" etc.

Fintan, Any fine wine can be sent through me. I'll test it first, just to make sure it isn't poisoned.
