Rock On Record Shop

Post Thu Mar 17, 2005 2:40 am

A Question for those in the know...

While spending time in London last summer, I was fortunate enough to have walked, and drank, in some of the coolest places around town that I'm sure the Pogues used to frequent...

I keep reading info. about a record shop called Rock On (Hanway st.), which was where Shane and apparently Phillip Chevron used to work back in the early days.
Well a couple of times at least, I went to this great bar on Hanway St. called Bradley's Spanish Bar, which I've just noticed is also located on Hanway St.

Does anyone know if this is the same Hanway St. where the record shop once was, and if so was this bar there at the same time the shop was??

Thanks in advance for any info....+ Happy St. Pat's!

"Rocks Off" (where Shane worked) was in Hanway Street, London W1, just behind the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Steet. "Rock On" (where I worked)was beside Camden Town tube station, behind the Electric Ballroom.

Both grew out of Ted Carroll's "Rock On" stall in the old Soho Market. Ted set up his business (and another "Rock On" shop in Goldhawk Road) after selling out his interest in Thin Lizzy. Phil Lynnot immortalised his former manager in "The Rocker" - "I get my records at the Rock On stall/Teddy Boy he's got them all".

When Soho Market was demolished to make way for a car park, Stan Brennan and Phil Gaston set up their shop in Hanway Street and Ted moved the main shop to Camden.
