pog spiders thoin

Post Sun May 30, 2004 5:21 pm

sorry to see the myth that spider thought of the name being petrpetuated. at the time of the bands inception he had never even been to ireland.
i was a regular in the hanway street shop where shane worked and was there when they were going through a variety of names. there used to be a tall irish guy working there at the time who suggested two names "the men they couldn't hang" and "pog mo thoin" , "pog mo ..." won they day and "the men they..." became the moniker for fellow shop regular Cush newly formed band.

hey "fred" you're speaking out of your arse. every fool knows it was a record shop in hanway street not a sweet shop! stan brennan came up with the men they couldn't hang and spider came up with pogue mahone round at shane's flat in cromer street. and what the hell difference does it make that he hadn't been to ireland at that point?!?!! sounds like you've got an axe to grind. what did he do, steal your girlfriend??!

I think knowall did. Fred F. certainly didn't. :)

I suspect knowall misread "hanway street shop" as "hanway sweet shop" and then got all crazy.

i just thought it was strange that some guy who used to go into a record shop feels that he knows what went on better than the band and why he feels so strongly about it!

"pog mo thoin"- Is this how "Pogue Mahone" is actually written? Is Pogue Mahone an english pronounciation version of it?

Yes, "póg mo thóin" is the original Irish Gaelic spelling. "Pogue mahone" is the anglicized version - perhaps as close English reflection of the original Irish pronunciation as possible. The translation is not necessary, I guess. ;)

Moreover, she even offered to kiss her arse :-)

Sorry to crush your hopes (I guess you were looking forward to an unforgettable spectacle of me performing an acrobatic act), but I merely invited volunteers to kiss mine. Brush up your knowledge of the proud language of your homeland, Paddy! ;)
