Shane Piano Skills?

Post Mon Nov 13, 2006 7:02 pm

I am a piano player and trupet player. I know for sure he could not play the trumpet as a major part of playing it is your teeth  . I have seen in some videos of fairytale of new york him sitting at the piano. Can he actually play it? :?

I thought that could have been the case as I just watched it again and where you see the right notes being played the camera does not show Shane's face so you probably right.

James explained it here: "I knew that putting on Shane's rings and wearing his jacket for the video of Fairy Tale, so it would look like Shane played the piano on the song, might come and bite me on the arse, if this is being bitten on the arse, not really. Shane can play the piano, sort of, but in a style that might best be described as - well - childlike, you know, as in 'childlike wonder' - not intended to be pejorative in any way. But those are my fingers at the piano on the video. Payrolled facilitators at the time had the idea that it would look better if it appeared that Shane was playing the piano. Didn't want to do it at the time, myself, but there you go."

Did Shane write the initial piano parts for Fairytale? I know they were based on music from the movie Once Upon A Time In America but was Shane's piano musings what made the rest of the piece or did James lay them down?

That brings me to the question, how does Shane write his songs? Does he just beat them around on guitar for a while? Comes up with the lyrics first? Music first? Either way?

I think one of the guys (possibly Philip) explained on here before - something like Shane gets a tune in his head and knocks it out and the band build on it from there. Might be wrong though so I apologise in advance :)

In this thread Philip revealed some details of the process.
