Favorite Pogues Song to Play Live...

Post Fri Oct 27, 2006 1:14 am

Hey Mr C.
May be a dumb question, but, what is your favorite Pogues song to play live? "thousands" cos it's yer song (can't imagine the thrill of playing your creation in front of thousands of people singing along and enjoying) ..if that is your choice I would certainly understand..I would choose my song!......or some other song...simply cos of the guitar riff, or the energy, or the melody.
Thanks.

It's not a dumb question, which is nt to say it won't get a dumb, or at least a disappointing answer. "Thousands" scares me to death every night until after I've sung it which, paradoxically, I really love doing. For all the other numbrs, there are elements to look forward to, bits which may require more concentration than others, bits where I know the hands are likely to protest. But in truth, the BEST times are the moments when the whole band slips into something akin to a state of grace and these are NEVER predictable, so it's best tp pay attention at all tiimes and be ready to receive these gifts when they come.

Great answer, actually...kind of what I expected from a true musician in a great group.....there are those moments where everyone could be playing every note, dead on for nights and not miss a beat and, as far as individual performance, it could be spot on......but there are those nights where..there may be a bum note here and there..but when everyone is in that "zone" and playing with each other, rather than just playing the song "to play the notes in the song"..(so to speak)..where the magic occurs....I humbly think, THAT is when the Pogues are at their most magical.

Those are some great thoughts, Mr C... I personally love playing "Thousands" in my own shows, and I am sure to give you credit every time!!!!! The guys are learing how to play it with me, so we will finally have a full sound for it, with whistle and button accordion.

Oh no, we never play bum notes, just notes that do not have a conventional home. 8)

I was also wondering if you had a favorite song to play live so I looked and found this thread. Since your time off and coming back did you find yourself thinking "damn I really missed playing that song" when the show was over? And on a related note, do you know if any of your band mates have a song that they consider their favorite to play live?
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

No on both counts.

Is there a chance that you will play Lorelei live in the next shows?

It's extremely unlikely. At the moment, I'm resting "Thousands Are Sailing" to give my voice a fighting chance of recovery after the throat/neck cancer.
