SOURCELast Wednesday: The Pogues at The Fillmore. Another big one as it featured the entire original lineup.. including that bumbling drunk Shane. What a mess that guy is. He stumbled out, really had no idea where he was, and started the "show". The first 5 songs were a trainwreck. They had to start "A Pair of Brown Eyes" over cause he missed the first verse. He finally got it together for the second half of the set and it rocked. Although he kept announcing that "This song is called the Irish Rover" for 4 songs. They finally played it. Highlight for me was him nailing (somehow) "A Rainy Night in Soho".
They played 4 nights and we were there for the 3rd. My friend had seen the two nights before and she said that Shane looked even worse then.
SOURCEThere was obviously a lot of excitement in the Fillmore as many fans awaited eagerly the entrance of a band most love and have never seen live before. Particularily as Shane McGowan would be with them tonight. I hadn't seen this band together in probably 15 years and that time he fell off the stage and that was it - show over..
First impression at seeing Shane McGowan walk onto the stage was one of sheer terror - my god how is this man still walking? He didn't quite walk onto the stage - more like drag or scrape himself across - the man was pissed drunk and I mean obliterated by alcohol. What surprised me was that although he was utterly wasted and sounded like he was singing through a breathing tube he still sounded good - like he belonged there. This was obviously his band and he ruled the stage. A few times he made comments between songs which no one understood - more like the ranting of a crazy man. They played a really great selection of songs from If I Should Fall From Grace and Rum Sodomy.. and fans loved it.
As the night went on Shane became more animated on stage - there was less using the microphone as aid to keep him upright and he started dancing around - his voice became clearer - you could almost make out some of what he was saying.
I could say that musically it wasn't the greatest experience of my life..but all in all I actually really enjoyed the show..it was a lot of fun.
SOURCEThe Pogues were freaking awesome!
I'm still alittle out of it. Getting hit in the head by a drunken dancer jumping on the crowd didn't help any. But it was amazing. They played for two hours, and there was only one song I didn't know. Shane McGowan is a drunk fuck, but the rest of them were totally with it. He can still sing though, and remembered 85% of the words. Especially toward the end, he would just sort of mumble through the beginnings of songs, and the crowd would pick it up. But still it was the FUCKING POGUES!
As soon as they introduced Philip Chevron about half way through, I knew what was gonna happen. I snapped a quick pic, and turned to Megan, saying "I'm gonna cry." She tried to tell me not to, but as the opening chords hit, it was too late. I cried all the way through Thousands are Sailing. I just kept singing along so I wouldn't totally start sobbing, cause I almost did a few times. I knew that was gonna happen, but I didn't realize just how much it would hit me. But I would do that every night if I could. I hope heaven is one giant 24/7 Irish punk show.
The rest of the show was fabulous. Being a sold out show, the floor was packed. We were getting moved around, pushed and shoved, elbowed and knocked, but it was still totally awesome. I had to elbow some E-tard who was flailing behind me. I got him good in the gut after he knocked me at least 3 times. I dont think he knew what or who hit him, but he stopped for a bit. Luckily I got away from him before he started again. Some other guy kept poking me. Well not poking, but I think he was mistaking me for his girlfriend. He must have been pretty drunk, cause we looked nothing alike. He poked me once, like to get my attention, and another time, he put his hand on my waist briefly, while passing through the crowd, but he definitely paused before realizing I wasn't who he was looking for. Something other guy gave my sister a high five for her Morrissey shirt, then proceeded to stare at us the rest of the concert. However, Megan and I spent half the concert trying to get the attention of the guitarist from the opening band. He was sitting in the balcony right above us. During their set, he looked so unhappy, we just wanted to give him hugs. They are a local band, so we are considering being fangirls and stalking him for hugs. I think it would be beneficial to his health.
I went home with two sweet posters and a shirt. I got some very blurry photos. My sister and I agree though, Spider Stacey is one sexy old man. And Andrew Ranken had a little stuffed bear on his drumset.
