I'm going to see them in July actually.

Your first time Heather?

Yes and I'm really looking forward to it. :D

Have a good time!!
I think they're a fabulous band.

Thanks I'm sure I will.

More fiddle

Post Sat Sep 30, 2006 11:22 pm

As I said before when I was known as pogues22, stop comparing The Pogues and Flogging Molly. I just listened to Rum, Sodomy and the Lash then Drunken Lullabies, do I really need to say more about which one was better. You claim more fiddle,I think that is the biggest understatement of the year. The Pogues did incorporate the fiddle into some of their songs, Dirty Old Town, Billy's Bones, The Irish Rover and The Rare Old Mountain Dew with the Dubliners, Jack's Heroes, Whiskey In the Jar, and The Limerick Rake. Now I'm aware that most of these recording were with the Dubliners, but that is not to say that Pogues have never used a fiddle in their songs. I much prefer the tin whistle to the fiddle. I wish FM would get rid of that dreadful electric guitar, it just sounds so out of place, and oh yeah you claim FM has more fiddle, well the Pogues used more mandolin, cittern, bouzuki, concertina, and other various instruments as well.

Ditto.. I think Dave King is an interestingly driven man. I quite like their music, in fact, I wish I could write anything half as good as they do. Tobacco Island is a fine song for example.
And, regarding the never-ending debate : there ARE only so many notes, cadences, riffs, motifs, and things out there. Sooner or later they get re-used. By the logic used by some folks (like folk purists for example), The Pogues themselves made considerable 'borrowings' from the trad music corpus. How 'original' was that? By MY standards it was HIGHLY original, but others may disagree. Good luck to 'em and fuck the begrudgers.

When composing classical music started out some composer said that because there is only 6 notes in a few years all the combinations would have been used and from then on everything made will be a copy of something els. I dont think bands borrow riffs because all the possible riff combinations have been used up. I could compose an original riff right now it would no doubt be shite but original all the same!

Good one. Glad someone else noticed the lack of proper tribute.

Everybody noticed it. This is really a shame. I mean, I can name at least four songs that are almost exactly like a Pogue's song. Still, they never mention The Pogues and they claim to be the best Rock'n Roll band in the world. Bullshit... Still, their music is enjoyable and their live performances, incredible. I just think Dave King has a disproportioned head.

I dunno... at the London gig he called himself an arsehole for monaing about warm beer when there was wars going on. And he stopped to pay tribute to Luke Kelly, Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash. Still - I havn't heard any interviews or anything so you're probably right.

Maybe, but he still claimed that FG is the best Rockn roll band in the world. Somewhat pretentious.

Confincence, even misplaced, is worth something. Someone make that a signature.

Found this on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RpXH2XS96c

This is a video comparing the Pogues' "Turkish Song of the Damned" to Flogging Molly's "Another Bag of Bricks". You be the judge - have they borrowed from The Pogues or not? Funny thing is that it´s the video to Waxie´s Dargle and the music to "Turkish"
There´s also another one comparing The Pogues' "Fiesta" to Flogging Molly's "Sentimental Johnny".
