I remember reading that when Kevin Rowland did that covers album a few years ago, his version of Thunder Road couldnt be included because Kev had changed the lyrics, and Springsteen didnt like the way hed "reinterpreted" them. Did The Pogues/Shane get the chance to veto Mr Boyzones version?

Kirsty and Shane set an uncomfortable "precedent" when they sang some of the revised lyrics (minus the Pogues) on Top Of The Pops when the record was a minor hit for the 2nd time - in 1991, I think. By that stage, Shane was no longer in The Pogues, and anyway, the reissue was more of a Warners idea than a Pogues one, but he and Kirsty agreed to promote the single. For whatever reason, they succumbed to pressure to alter the lyrics - they both look so miserable on that appearance that it is my guess they just wanted to get it over with and get the hell out of there. I never really understood why they didn't stand their ground - after all, Kirsty had only changed one word, and then ambiguously, in 1987 (Ass for Arse). Anyway, this seems to be the model that Ro and Moya later used.

I was aware of none of this until we did the Jonathan Ross Show in December 2005 and we heard that Katie Melua was going to have to do the revised lyric. Essentially, myself and a couple of the others said "Over my dead body" and threatened to pull out of the show. This is the Jonathan Ross Show ferchrissakes - where the host recently enquired of the leader of Her Majesty's Opposition whether he had ever "wanked over pictures of Margaret Thatcher" as a lad. Anyway, both the BBC and our TV lady at Warners raised the spectre of the 1991 TOTP appearance as a "precedent". Upon which I puffed out my chest and declared "The Pogues did not appear on TOTP in 1991, we have never performed FoNY with these lyrics, nor would we have. If you want THE POGUES to play FoNY on your show, you will accept the content of the song as we have ALWAYS played it." I was magnificent. We did the show.

Ironically I got the impression from an interview I watched that Mr. Keating actually really seemed to love FoNY.

Yes, he loved it like an actor loves Hamlet but wonders if that "To be or not to be" soliloquy could perhaps use a rewrite.

LOL!

You really love his version, don't you?

I assume that this question could be rephrased as:

"Can somebody point me to where I can legally buy this track?"

It's available on iTunes. You could also buy it on the "The Snake" CD by Shane MacGowan, or on the "Circle of Friends" soundtrack.

If the question could instead be rephrased as:

"Can somebody please send me the track, or tell me where I can download it for free (legal or otherwise)?"

then I'm afraid you're out of luck here. This kind of discussion is prohibited on these fora.

There were two different versions of the Snake album released with slightly different tracks on each.

Shane MacGowan and the Popes The Snake (original release)
17th October 1994 - 4509-98104-2 (ZTT Records)

Shane MacGowan and the Popes The Snake (revised release)
UK: June 1995 - 0630-10402-2 (ZTT Records)

Check out shanemacgowan.com for the track listings for each version.

Not on my copy either but I have the US version from when it came out and looks like they only sell this import version with that song added. I think I like the CD better without it. Can I get a Me Too?

I'll give you a hollaback on that. I think the song is terrible and drags down whatever it's near.
