An interview with Paul Weller

Post Tue Jul 04, 2006 11:34 am

MODFATHER'S MAN FOR NOT A CHANGING
Weller will never forget his roots - and wouldn't want to Paul Weller has blazed a trail in the music business for 30 years but he can't stand the star culture
By Richard Purden
The Daily Record
1 Jul 2006

<blockquote>It's nearly 30 years since Paul Weller exploded on to the British music scene with The Jam.

Celebrating his 48th birthday last month The Modfather shows no signs of slowing down in what he describes as a golden period for music.

Prior to a headline slot on the NME stage at T in the Park next weekend and a string of European festivals, Weller has also just issued Catch Flame - a double live album spanning material from The Jam, Style Council and solo years. Even during Weller's fallow periods with the press he has always remained one of Britain's big live draws, especially in Scotland.

And when we meet at his studio in Weller's home town of Woking, it's clear the feeling is mutual. </blockquote>

On Shane:
<blockquote>"The Jam were a bit green coming from Woking down to London. Shane MacGowan was one of our first mates on the scene in the early stages.

"He was a great character, very intelligent and one of our first vocal supporters. He had a fanzine where he'd write glowing reviews. Even then he was the wild man of the scene."

Weller then bursts out laughing and says: "He'd do some weird stuff like pull a cheese sandwich out his pocket.

"In his house there were cooked fried eggs on the mantelpiece. He'd offer you breakfast - but you never took it. "</blockquote>

Great quotes there.. fried eggs on the mantle??

Has anyone heard the new cd? Having seen the Jam and Weller several times it would be hard to capture him live.. similar to the Pogues really. One of the greatest shows I ever went to was Weller in 1992 Glasgow Barrowlands. Great venue and Weller had the place on fire.. Respect!!
