In parts of England, there are regional variations on the phrase which create potential for amusement.

For instance (as a Northerner) when in the South, someone may ask you if they can "bum a fag" or "ponce a fag". You'd know what they meant, but you'd be tempted to snicker...

In English supermarkets, you can buy "bacon faggots" (though they're often sold as 'bacon bites' or 'bacon nuggets' nowadays), which are like chicken nuggets, but made with processed bacon.

As far as I know, the use of the term 'faggot' to describe homosexuals originated from the "bundle of sticks for burning" definition. The implication was that the only thing that homosexuals were useful for was as fuel for the bonfire.

I still find the expression "buttfucking fags" (light one fag with another fag) a tad on the dirty side ;)

OK, now this is making me feel like a total dumb-ass, but I switched to Old Gold filters many years ago after buying Tom Waits' "Nighthawks at the Diner" where Tom (a) appeared to be smoking an OG on the cover, and (b) had a great rap on the album " you light up an Old Gold ... save the coupon! ... hey, gotta think in terms of that patio furniture and that Toro mower, you know ..."

-sigh- those were the days, back when I still had lungs.
the mirrors would do well to reflect further

Well, hmm...back in the glory days of '76, it was Winstons (according to Victoria's book).

call it "flash back" or "deja vu" result will be the same...
First words of subject recall sweet reminiscences of far-off distant days.
'twas long ago we faced the foe. I mean we faced this thread raising same smoky question...
