The Pogues did an Elvis song (Whole lotta lovin?) on an NME freebie in the 80's. On the inner sleeve of the tape box there were interviews of the performers about Elvis and someone asked shane if he had ever rhumba'd in the back of a sports car.

He replied : "No, but I've thrown up in the back of a Transit."

I laughed for a week.

If you ask him very very politely (in a not-giving-a-fuck-about-the-rules sort of way), Mr C might tell you to stop typing too :p

I don't get it.

i like what shane thinks about drinking
i feel the same way about drugs and alcohol
it's about self discovery,
it has nothing to do with what it does to you on the outside
it's what it does to you on the inside

when you drink you can think about all the people who came before you
all of your ancestors who also had their tots 'o grog
and through that you can start to realte to them
and start to place yourself in terms of the history of people
and not the history of the "isms" they teach in school

Noel Kenny wrote:Back around 1992, I met Shane for a drink in Joe Corcoran's snug. we were having a quiet jar when some asshole stuck his head in from the bar and asked Shane to sing a song. Shane said "Not now, maybe later." This went on for about a half an hour and we were getting pissed off as we hadn't met for a while and had a few things to talk about.

Shane: "What do you do for a living?"

Asshole: "I'm a carpenter"

Shane: "Make me a fucking table"

Reminds me of Dylan's response to George Harrison concerning the Concert for Bangladesh. George wanted Dylan to
play the benefit for Bangladesh concert. George asked Dylan to play his
early stuff like "Blowin'In the Wind". Dylan, not too pleased came
back with this quick retort: "You gonna play 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'"?

I do drink, and I usually have a good time when I do, but not for any journey of "self discovery", as Benno calls it. Getting drunk once in a while is fair enough in my book, but it's not something I'd do more than once a week. As for drugs, I've never tried any and have no interest in them at all. I've seen too many people who've ruined their lives with drugs or excessive drinking. I think one of the biggest myths is that cannabis is safe. I've met a number of people who have mental problems as a result of using it. I'm not saying it happens to everyone that uses cannabis, just that it does happen.

Well, that may be true, but think about the amount of people who use alcohol that you know and have mental problems. As far as I am concerned booze, fags and weed are on a par. It's all just politics. A drug is a drug, I am not preaching and not calling any substance "good" or "bad". All I'm saying is the drugs you have been forced to accept as part of a social event or acceptable lifestyle may not be any better for you than others. :D
