Friggin in the Riggin

The Sex Pistols covered this traditional in Feb of 1979. It's a mix of traditional song and punk style and attitude (or as Mr. Rotten puts it - "Hold on; give it some bollocks!").

I wonder if this cover had any influence on Shane and his early ideas of playing traditionals with the energy and enthusiasm of punk? Anyone know if there's some kind of lineage between this performance and what eventually became The Pogues?

I could be wrong DZM but i think it's actually Steve Jones who says "Hold On - give it some bollocks!!!" .

Johnny Rotten had already left the Sex Pistols (the famous "Ever felt like you've been cheated?") by the time Great Rock N Roll Swindle was made and had nothing do with the songs or production. I've avoided buying that album, despite being something of a Steve Jones fan. Never liked Sid Vicious. The song Silly Thing really has something special and alot of it has to do with Steve's vocal. And his shit-load of guitar.
I've heard the song and it's an intriguing notion. We know Shane was and remains a massive Sex Pistols fan, and the punking up of a traditional number could have kicked up the thought process that was continued with Ska and 2-tone before he had his great epiphany.

The vocal of 'Silly Thing' on the album is actually Paul Cook ! It's funny - i'd probably fall down on my twelve times table but i appear to have retained lots of useless info about the Sex Pistols !!
'Silly Thing' still sounds good now.

Quite the contrary here. Swindle is the only album I bothered to get. And it was a real hunting some years ago. Could not find it on CD, managed to obtain cassette only. And all the asperities just for the sake of Friggin song

The rest is great too, Bambi, Hands - class. The only problem is cassette constituent of my stereo collapsed two years ago, playing Swindle

at my birthday party :lol:

Hmm, not sure . Maybe some vocals with The Professionals which is the band Paul & Steve formed post-Pistols. Sure there must be a cd somewhere.

Funny....just earlier as I was having dinner I threw on a dvd comp of old Pistols footage and there's a video on there for "Silly Thing," but with Jones doing the singing. I think it's the version used in the Swindle movie itself, but the version on the Swindle album definitely has Cook on vocals. I've never been able to find out if there's a 7" version or some other release with the Jones-vocal. Personally, I prefer Cook's vocals on the tune. The video cracks me up -- Steve and Paul look all dolled up, almost boyband-like. Trying to pull birds, I guess.

As for the Professionals, it's all Steve Jones vocals. And good stuff at that. There are two main cds out there -- one is the studio album I Didn't See It Coming, with a bunch of single tracks and b-sides tacked on; the other is just called The Professionals, which is harder, earlier versions of many of the album tracks recorded as a 3-piece, with many of the same bonus tracks tacked on. I think Virgin might've released some other comp too that mixes and matches various tracks from the first two cd releases (they love milking back catalogues), but I could be wrong about that.

I got the Professionals CD today and Paul does sing on a few tracks. It's a cool Best of thing.
Man, the Kinks should sue over the song Payola.

i'm really tempted to get ' i didn't see it coming' , i used to have '1-2-3' which was a great track .
Am definately gonna watch '....Swindle' again this weekend too .

I always thought it was Steve Jones. Its a long time since i saw the film but he sings it on there doesnt he?.
Anyone got a link where i can hear the Proffesionals or any other Cook/Jones stuff.?
