Makes me wonder what 12082 is (if 12081 is Ultimate Collection and 12083 is Red Roses...)

June 1985

I think I'm right in saying it's a different mix of WILD CATS as Elvis had not settled on the mix for the album.

Does anybody have a copy of this alternate mix of 'Wildcats'?

Bootlegs:
THE POGUES: LIVE ON RAIN STREET
Streams of Whiskey/ If I Should Fall From Grace With God/ Boys From The County Hell/ Young Ned of the Hill/ Rain Street/ Sayonara/ The Battle Of Brisbane/ The Body of an American/ Summer in Siam/Thousands are Sailing/The Sunnyside of the Street/Dirty Old Town/The Sick Bed of Chuchulainn/Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!/Fiesta/Sally Maclennane
recorded live in Leysin, Switzerland, July 12 1991, The Swingin' Pig
TSP-CD-108

The above has been released under various names on various labels, including "Streams Of Whiskey" and "Bad Lieutenant". I know of at least 4 versions, but can't remember all the names of the others. All of them share the same error on the tracklisting: "Repeal of the Licensing Laws" is incorrectly listed as "Battle of Brisbane".

THE POGUES: SINK THAT BOTTLE
Metropolis / Streams of Whiskey / Boys From The County Hell / Boat Train / Cotton Fields / Young Ned of the Hill / Johnny / USA / Gridlock / Lorelei / Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six / Down All the Days / Thousands are Sailing / Gartloney Rats / Bottle Of Smoke / The Sick Bed of Chuchulainn / A Rainy Night in Soho / Fiesta
recorded live in Europe, 1990
KTS065

Again there are errors on the tracklisting: "Battle March Medley" is incorrectly listed as "Metropolis" and "Johnny Come Lately" is listed as "Johnny"

THE POGUES: FINDING PARTNERS TO GET DRUNK WITH

This is a copy of all the songs from the "Live at the Town and Country Club" video. Track listing is the same as the video. The version of Dirty Old Town on this CD appears to be taken from a different concert as the sound quality is different from that of the rest of the gig. On the video this bootleg is copied from, Dirty Old Town is interrupted mid-song by an interview, which explains why they choose to use a different version on this release.

THE POGUES: LIVE IN TOKYO 10/31/88

Track listing is as follows:
Battle March Medley/ The Broad Majestic Shannon/ Streams Of Whiskey/ If I Should Fall.../ Lullaby Of London/ Boat Train/ Metropolis/ A Rainy Night In Soho/ Johnny Come Lately/ Bottle Of Smoke/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah/ Streets Of Sorrow/ The Birmingham Six/ Turkish Song Of The Damned/ Fiesta/ Sally Maclennane/ Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn/ Dirty Old Town/ Honky Tonk Women/ The Irish Rover/ Thousands Are Sailing/ U.S.A.

This is taken from a Japanese TV broadcast and is also available on VHS video and DVD. The video/DVD and, I think, some versions of the CD, also contain a track called "Japan" between Honky Tonk Women and The Irish Rover. The track listing above is for the copy I have, but I believe many other copies have Thousands Are Sailing and U.S.A. earlier in the gig (Thousands after Yeah, Yeah, Yeah and U.S.A. after Lullaby).

THE POGUES AND THE CHIEFTANS: LONDON 7/15/91
Brixton Academy

Track listing is as follows:
If I Should Fall.../ Boys From The County Hell/ Sayonara/Young Ned Of The Hill/ White City/ Rain Street/ Thousands Are Sailing/ Sick Bed Of Cuchalainn/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah/ Sally Maclennane/ Streams Of Whiskey*/ Medley*/ Biddy Mulligan*/ Repeal Of The Licensing Laws*/ Kitty*/ London you're A Lady*/ Dirty Old Town*/ Drowsey Maggie (with solos)*/ Star Of The County Down*/ Unknown traditional song*/ The Irish Rover*/ Waxie's Dargle*/ Drowsey Maggie*.

There are numerous errors on the track listing quoted on this bootleg, which I have corrected above. Features Danny Heatley on percussion. All songs marked* are with The Chieftains. The solos played by The Pogues in Drowsey Maggie include Andrew playing Gridlock and, I think, some parts of Squid Out Of Water. One of the greatest Pogues gigs ever, though The Chieftains' Derek Bell obviously didn't agree- in his autobiography he described the gig as being too loud to hear anything properly!
(N.B. I have removed the reference to The Dubliners in the title of this gig as I do not think they played and are not listed on the sleeve)

SELF AID, DUBLIN, 17th MAY 1986

Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn/ Body Of An American/ Dirty Old Town/ Sally Maclennane

Charity concert featuring 30 Irish bands to raise money to create jobs in Ireland. Was broadcast on Irish TV and, I think, radio. Dirty Old Town was later released on the "Live For Ireland" CD/LP/CASS of the event.

WEMBLEY ARENA, 17th December 1988

Battle March Medley/ The Broad Majestic Shannon/ Streams Of Whiskey/ If I Should Fall.../ U.S.A./ Lullaby Of London/ Metropolis/ The Limerick Rake/ A Rainy night In Soho/ Johnny come Lately/ Turkish Song of The Damned/ A Pair of Brown Eyes/ And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda/ Train Of Love/ Street of Sorrow- The Birmingham Six/ Thousands Are Sailing/ The Old Main Drag/ White City/ Fairytale Of New York/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

This bootleg does not include the entire gig. Features an early version of U.S.A. which was, at the time, an unreleased track. There is also a rare lead vocal from Jem Finer, on Train Of Love. He introduced the song by saying "get out your ear plugs, because I'm singing this one!".

THE POGUES INTERVIEW, RTE RADIO 21st November 1988

Shane MacGowan, Philip Chevron, Mary Coughlan, Terry Woods and Frank Murray being interviewed by Dave Fanning on RTE radio in Ireland. Features a few Pogues songs being played; Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, The Limerick Rake, Honky Tonk Women, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah (Extended Version) and Fairytale Of New York. These are the officially released versions. Some of the songs are cut out or shortened on the bootleg. I would guess the alcohol had flowed for some of the guests. Mary Coughlan swears during the broadcast, prompting Philip to say something like: "You can't do that Mary, this is RTE!". This is a really interesting interview and Shane is on great form. Arguably the best Pogues interview around.

Always a pleasure!

More bootlegs:

THE SESSION, RTE, 7th JUNE 1987

Streams Of Whiskey/ The Balinalee/ If I Should Fall.../ I Fought The Law (with Joe Strummer)/ London Calling (with Joe Strummer)/ Lullaby Of London/ South Australia/ Repeal Of The Licensing Laws/ Turkish song Of The Damned/ The Irish Rover (with The Dubliners)

Irish TV broadcast available as a bootleg on both audio and video. Also features four songs performed by The Dubliners without The Pogues.

HAMMERSMITH PALAIS, 17th MARCH 1986.

A Pistol For Paddy Garcia/ The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn/ Streams Of Whiskey/ Billy's Bones/ Repeal Of The Licensing Laws/ Transmetropolitan/ A Pair Of Brown Eyes/ Dirty Old Town/ Wild Cats Of Kilkenny/ London Girl/ Sally MacLennane/ Jesse James/ I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day/ Dingle Regatta/ The Body Of An American/ Poor Paddy/ Waxie's Dargle/ Greenland Whale Fisheries/ The Old Main Drag/ Wild Rover/ The Parting Glass/ Kitty/ Dark Streets Of London/ The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

A great St Patrick's day gig which features a fantastic version of Wild Cats Of Kilkenny. One of my big regrets is never having heard this played at a Pogues gig; it sounds much better than the studio version. Some of the songs are erroneously left off the track listing on the sleeve; above is my corrected track listing.

DERBY ASSEMBLY ROOMS, 25th OCTOBER 1990.

Streams Of Whiskey/ If I Should Fall From Grace With God/ Cotton Fields/ Young Ned Of The Hill/ Rain Street/ Sayonara/ A Rainy Night In Soho/ Sunnyside Of The Street/ Repeal Of The Licensing Laws/ The Broad Majestic Shannon/ The Body Of An American/ Gartloney Rats/ The Ghost Of A Smile/ Summer In Siam/ Thousands Are Sailing/ Bottle Of Smoke/ Dirty Old Town/ The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn/ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah- The Beat Goes On/ The Star Of The County Down/ A Pair Of Brown Eyes/ Sally MacLennane/ Boys From The County Hell/ The Irish Rover

As was common at that time Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah is an exteneded version featuring Darryl Hunt rapping in the middle of the song. This time his rap was The Beat Goes On. N.B. I remember seeing a couple of other Pogues gigs in the same tour when he was rapping a George Michael song (Careless Whisper?).

FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE, 15th APRIL 1988

Fiesta/ Streets Of Sorrow- The Birmingham Six

This has been bootlegged on both audio and video formats. English TV show which was broadcast live and presented by Ben Elton. Each week the show featured a mixture of comedy acts and bands. This broadcast caused much controversy when The Birmingham Six was cut mid song. The editors cut to a commercial break before the last verse could be broadcast. In the TV show Points Of View the following week, the makers denied censorship and claimed that the show was overrunning. However, the song was banned by The Independent Broadcasting Authority shortly afterwards, effectively banning it from television. The ban was finally lifted when the Birmingaham Six were released form prison.

POG MO THOIN- BOTTOMS UP
BACK TO ZERO
BTZCD- 006

Turkish Song Of The Damned (Unreleased Home Tape)/ Rainy Night In Soho (Flugelhorn Version Re-mix)/ Murder Ska (Unreleased)/ Ghost Of A Smile (Demo)/ Wake Of The Medusa (Demo)/ Summer In Siam (Demo with Bongos)/ Bastard Landlord (Demo)/ NW3 (Unreleased)/ Victoria (Instrumental)/ Redemption Song (Unreleased)/ Lust For Vomit (Instrumental)/ Five Green Queens And Jean (Demo)/ My Baby's Gone (Demo)/ Wadi Hammamat (Demo)/ Fisherman (Unreleased)/ Hot Asphalt (Unreleased)/ Toss-Pint (Re-mix)/ Heart Shaped Sunglasses (Unreleased)/ London Calling/ I Fought The Law/ Turkish Song Of The Damned
1-18 (Home tapes/ Studio outtakes 1987-1992) 19-21 (Town and Country Club live mixes with joe Strummer)

The sleeve states that this CD is Limited edition of 250. Some of the tracks on this CD have appeared on other bootlegs under the name "The Falconer Demos". The last three tracks are the same as those released as B sides on the two Tuesday Morning CD singles, but the versions here appear louder and actually sound better than those officially released.

SOUNDTRACKS:

STRAIGHT TO HELL RETURNS
2004
CD: CATALOGUE NUMBER- BIG BEAT CDWIKD 239

Track listing
1. Evil Darling - Joe Strummer

25. Big Nothing - MacManus Gang
26. Taranta Del Fuente - The Pogues
27. High Fives - Zander Schloss

Contains nine extra tracks by The Pogues not included on the original release, but excludes The Good, The Bad and The Ugly from the original. The version of Rabinga on this release is different to the one on the original Straight To Hell CD, though it doesn't say so on the sleeve. If you compare the two by listening to the beginning of each, you will hear that the drums come in sooner on the "new" mix.

They still talk of this night in hushed tones in RTE. Believe it or not, I was hauled in from a previously-arranged chat (with either BP Fallon or Ferdia MacAnna) in an adjacent studio in an attempt to impose some sort of order on the chaos, as Fanning had completely lost control of the show. The fact that that's all I can remember should tell you how successful a ploy that was!
