Celtic Punk Band Today

Post Fri Apr 14, 2006 12:05 am

Mr. Chevron, I was just wondering what is your opinion on the new wave of celtic punk band today. Bands like Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and Lancaster County Prison, to name a few are clearly influenced by The Pogues. I saw Dropkick open up for The Sex Pistols in 2003 in Boston, wasn't that impressed. Flogging Molly puts on a great live show, but their songs pale in comparison to your guys material. Also if you listen to Flogging Molly's Sentimental Johnny it is The Pogues Fiesta. Bag of Bricks is The Pogues Turkish Song of the Damned, and finally Tobacco Island steals a riff from Streams of Whiskey.

Overall, none of these new bands can match the amazing songwriting talents of each of you guys, but I would still like to hear your opinion on the matter

Thanks

Understandably, people don't believe me when I say I have no opinion of any of these bands, but really, I don't. I have yet to hear the DKMs although they toured with us. For all I know, they're brilliant (Spider likes 'em) and for that matter Foggy Molly may be best band ever, but I find my curiosity strangely unaroused by them.

As a rule, while the support band is on stage, I'm back at the hotel taking it easy before our show. I am usually not back at the venue until half hour call.

I couldn't call myself a major fan of either Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly, but I enjoy their music as much as the next person. To me, it's fun, nothing too serious, much better than most of the stuff I hear these days. It just doesn't have that weight behind it that the music of The Pogues did. I'm not sure anything ever will.

You said everything I was thinking, Paddy. Although I'm not a great lover of DKM, I do enjoy Flogging Molly.

Phil, Flogging Molly is fronted by a Dubliner who used to be in a Heavy Metal band in the 80s

i used to like them both a lot, now i just think they're mediocre. dkm's less irish-influenced stuff is the best.

and who cares if they knock-off a few riffs, it's not like the pogues never did.
