Cotton Fields and USA

Post Fri Apr 07, 2006 3:49 pm

By the time the Pogues started recording Peace and Love, MacGowan had become deeply involved with the raging acid house scene. Even recording an acid house track, "Contact Yourself," which he wanted to add on the Pogues new album. Even though this was later overruled by the other members of the band, I think Cotton Fields and USA show MacGowan's new budding interest in acid house. The first track, Cotton Fields, I think is one of his most underrated songs, I'll even go as far and say I thought it was one of standout tracks on the album. USA showed The Pogues doing more overpowering rock and the result was a rather entertaining, different song.

Your guys thoughts???

pogue22: I would agree that Cotton fields are great (I especially love the version in Great Woods, 1989)

What in God's name have " Cottonfields " and " USA " got to do with acid house ? The former is a cajun / rockabilly crossover loosely based around the riff of Elvis's " Marie's the name ( of his latest flame )". The latter is something similar, with a Doctor John track sampled at the end. It also uses the tune of " Battle hymn of the republic ", I think it's called, which emphasises the American themes in the song. Great banjo and accordian make it one of the better tracks on P&L.

Threads never die, they just get a little frayed. A good argument is never out of date.
