James - I Gave You a Lift!

Post Sat Mar 25, 2006 4:53 pm

In 1985 - after The Pogues played the Birmingham Powerhouse - you said (in your dulcet Mancunian tones) ... "Can I ask you a Question?" I thought - how odd - a Pogue wants to ask me a question. You asked if I could possibly accommodate you for the night. At that time I lived with my parents and though your drinking and swearing requirements were in somewhat short order compared to the redoudtable Mr. MacGowan I was a little nervous of unleashing you upon my beloved Mum and Dad, Mary Murphy and Phillie P. Davies.
Your reasoning became clearer in that The Pogues were playing Manchester in a couple of days and you wanted to get up there in advance to see your brother Andrew and your parents.
A solution was found - Joanne Ratcliffe's parents had a caravan on their drive and you would sleep in there. I drove you to Wombourne - went home to Great Barr - then picked you up in the morning and drove you to New Street Station in Birmingham in my little Mustard coloured Triumph Toledo. You were travelling extremely lightly - and all would have been well if you had not said - "Alright Mate" to Joanne Ratcliffe's Mother as you walked from the caravan to the house on the morning. I accept that she had a moustache - but it caused a little bit of avoidable upset. :?

Ah - Rum - thanks for the compliments. You are good company yerself! Here's hoping we'll meet once more at a Pogues show in Brum - and that I don't get kicked out again!
