Why the Pogues are great

Post Fri Mar 24, 2006 9:42 pm

basically, people like to label the pogues
as celtic folk band
with punk influences

but there are tons and tons of bands like this
so why are the pogues the best?

the pogues are a band of lamentation AND celebration
of things of the past
so many of their songs are about legends
or historical events
that effect irish, australian, america, spanish
whatever... just history
history of people just like them
trans-racial and trans-national unity
it's just great
they recognize that the good old days of the 1800s
arent coing back, but the feelings still exist
they might have been changed a bit (the punk stuff)
but it's still there

also it's sad, it laments the cruelties of people
the negative side of being poor in ireland, or just wherever
the underbelly of everything, hell's ditch, old main drag

anyways, just thought i had to tell everyone
about why the pogues are so great
it's all about people and history man
The girl cried out a few times and the old man slept with his mouth wide open and his bad teeth showing.

I figured that The Pogues are great because the alternative is too horrible to consider.

Hey, Benno, you sound like a bastardized version of Tom Waits. However, I love your reasons for explaining the obvious. The Pogues are modern Irish storytellers.

P.S. Benno I'm just giving you a hard time, don't take offense

yah wanks!

nah, it's just great that even today
we can relate to the stories
like when i think of my grandparents
and just all my ancestry
you just feel this great sense of kinship
it's like the music my family tree would make

even though im so far removed from it all
(living far from europe in a middle class family)
i can still feel it
and that's wicked

Some statements require no justification nor qualification.
The Pogues are great.
