Not to mention Some real classic tunes , Rock n Roll Paddy ,Lonesome Highway, Nancy Whiskey , the Stonking Donegal Express (dont remember this one played live tho)

Dont remember it? Tutut, he played it at the Rock Cafe!

Unfortunately my love of the liqour sometimes leaves my memories somewhat wanting

Pachinko is amusing, and isn't meant (I would assume) to be anything more than that. If you're going to damn both their albums for this song then you might as well damn both of Shane's solo efforts for Truck Drivin' Man.

i like Truck Drivin Man - particularly these brilliant lines:

Shoot that shit boy
Shoot that speed
Whip that bitch boy until she bleeds
Give me moonshine, some more morphine
Another fix of methadrine

Truck Drivin man is what I am
Just give me pussy, junk and gin
I'll pray to God to forgive my sins
Truck drivin man in the howlin wind

Shane could have rewritten the line with Forrest Gump. Barring that I think the lyrics are cool.

pogues best band of all times. But bouth the snake and cog are class albums. and between 94-2000 the popes was a exellent band. in my opinion is that many of Shane's songs on his solo albums are among his best. i love the punk vibe on the snake album. cog have 2 of Shane's most funny lyrics (ceilidh cowboy and truck drivin man) But it was good years between 93 and 97 with 2 pogues and 2 Shane albums in 3 years.

I agree. I like the songs, and I always like Shane's singing, but I recognize that the singing and playing could be much better.

Me point as well...Shane's solo stuff suits me much much better(oi do loike Pogues very very much but Shane on his own(with Popes) did amazing work)...Rock n roll Paddy,Paddy rolling stone,Mother Mo Chroi,Come to the Bower,Back in the County Hell,Victoria and others...they can easily match the greatest songs that Shane did with Pogues...If oi should fall from grace,Fairytale of New York,Streams of whiskey,Rainy noight in Soho etc.

Shane on his own reflects even more punk and rebel Irish rock and oi foind meself in that story as well...thats why with me band oim gonna focus mainly on songs that Shane did with Popes 8)

I simply do not get it. While I really, really like his solo stuff, I can hardly agree that any song of that period could match classics like IISFFGWG, Rainy Night in Soho or FoNY. IMHO there are only a couple of songs that might fit in the league of the better Pogues songs and one of it is a rip off of a not published Pogues' song and then there is "Snake with eyes of garnet" and "Paddy Public Enemy No. 1". I would not even mention "Donegal Express", since it has already been played with the Pogues.

BTW: Yesterday I first listened to "Live in Brixton" and afterwards to "Across the Broad Atlantic". Well... you cannot really compare it, I'm afraid the Popes just don't play in the Pogues' league.

I'm glad the Irish Rover shares my sentiments. The post-Shane material isn't anywhere near as good as MacGowan's solo efforts. Again MacGowan took it back to the roots of traditional Irish music, something the Pogues were doing on the first three albums, The Pogues without MacGowan continued the fusion shite, that signaled the end of the band. Donegal Express, The Snake With Eyes of Garnet, and Paddy Public Enemy Number One, to name a few are far better than any of the songs on Waiting For Herb and Pogue Mahone

One last thing, stop comparing the Pogues to Popes, that was two different periods of music.

I have said this before on the forum and will say it again.
I feel that the Popes have always been given a hard time on this forum and there is no argument that The Pogues are better than The Popes but given the chance of watching Shane with The Popes or not watching Shane at all what do you want ?.
After seeing Shane and The Popes at Stourbridge and Wolverhampton over the last two years I can only hope that we can see the return of Shane and The Popes at the smaller venues during the year whilst waiting for the now traditional Pogues Christmas shows.

Why do people get stuck in this rut of presenting their own subjective and dogmatic opinions as fact?

This is not something that's incontrovertable. This is not "2+2=4," this is "I like purple more than green" being presented as "Purple is better than green!" and then arguing with anyone that holds a contrary opinion as though they were saying "2+2=5." This type of debate shows a stubborn inability to find value in other people's opinions.

Maybe I'm just being too pragmatic here. I'd find your position much more palatable if you'd just phrase it as "I think the post-Shane era..." rather than "The post-Shane era...".

I agree, it's a wonderful lyric. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned The Song With No Name which I think was one of Shane's finest moments.

A bit off topic I know, but Paddy Public Enemy was shot in a phonebox down the road from my house. I used it just last night, in fact.

He used to work in the local sweet shop when I was a nipper too.
