Newcastle dismiss manager Souness

Post Thu Feb 02, 2006 3:25 pm

I'm not a Newcastle United fan, but if i was, i would be happy that Souness has been sacked. Newcastle's recent form has been awful.

More about the story here

I'm a staunch Man Utd fan but have to say Souness as a manager has been a disappointment compared to his career as a player. I think he was one of the best midfielders of his generation. As a kid I loved watching him and Bryan Robson go toe to toe - especially if Norman Whiteside was involved.
I think Souey should concentrate on being a pundit. He is superb at that, offering genuine insight that the other cretins like Lawrenson and Schmeichel don't come close to. But am sure like all the other great players he won't rest easy until he has acheived recognition as a manager.

I don't think Souness is much of a manager, but Newcastle have been incredibly unlucky with injuries this season and that certainly hasn't helped.

Thats true, Newcastle have been very unlucky with injuries to key players such as Owen.

I completely agree with you DaveG about Souness' managing career being disappointing compared to his playing career. I am a Liverpool fan and have a lot of respect for him as a player and think he is one of the great Liverpool players of the past.

Y'know, I think it was Walshy who chimed in on teh Pogues USA Tour link that she regretted not being able to participate (for obvious reasons... or at least not feeling the need to participate). I think I speak for most of us Americans that we just don't get it, but are somehow envious of your link, here. Just know that we will be cheering on our USA team in the World Cup, and remember this.... the USA has a tendency to field a team from time to time that seemingly comes out of nowhere and challenges the big boys. Remember hockey at Lake Placid. Our college students against your pros.

Yeah, but a lot of people blame Souey for running Liverpool into the ground when he took over for Daglish. And like Irish Rover I respect him, but his playing days are done. Frankly I can't forgive what he did at Liverpool as manager.

Don't get me wrong though, Roy Keane doesn't even deserve to be on the same pitch! :P Souey was such a hard man, I heard he'd take a cold bath after the match!

It's fair to say Souness would have been an amazing addition to any team of the era but players back then weren't as athletic as they've had to be in recent times, horses for courses and all that. Ditto Roy Keane it'd be a foolish man who wouldn't have wanted him in their team over a period of what? 8 years?

I think the USA have quite a good team but they may find it difficult to qualify from their group.

Italy and Czech Republic will be difficult games for them.

I know, I just don't see the US getting out of their group. What an unlucky draw. Although I can't remember what Italy did in Euro 2004, they haven't been too impressive since the last WC. But the Czechs are always up for it.

Yea... that wat they said in Lake Placid in 1980, in hockey. I hope we can continue this conversation after a few matches. :D
