Will Cait sing "Fairytale of New York" in 2004

Post Fri Dec 03, 2004 3:28 pm

Hello,

A few persons noticed that of course, with Cait O'Riordan back on track, wonderful songs such as "I'm a man you don't meet everyday" or "Haunted" will be played during the shows but even if my question appears as a little stupid, i wonder if it's her who will sing the beautiful "Fairytale of New York" with Shane ?
If i have a good memory, she was supposed to sing it in duet with MacGowan on "If I should fall from Grace with God" but she left the band and finally, the regrettly missed Kirsty McColl performed it in the most magical way we could dream of.

Though, a last question, will it be the first time for Cait O'Riordan to sing "Fairytale of New York" ?

Rolling back the tears...

I would assume so. I have an old video with an interview with Mr Macgowan on it saying that it was originally wrote with her singing????

Hello Joey,

"I have an old video with an interview with Mr Macgowan on it saying that it was originally wrote with her singing????"

As i remember, effectivly, it was the case. I just wanted to be sure.
I can't wait to hear this duet in one of the finest Pogues song (a writing masterpiece for sure.)

Yes, you are right! From an article about Shane and Kirsty: "The song was originally thought as a duet between Shane and The Pogue's female bass player Cait O'Riordan. But she left the band, and the CD's producer Steve Lillywhite suggested another name, his own wife, Kirsty MacColl."

By the way, a bit of repetition as MacGee has already asked this, but anyway: Have Cait and Shane ever sung Fairytale together? Is there any recording?

Hello Zuzana,

On Shane MacGowan forum, someone answered me about that and precisly said :

"cait sang fairytale at the olympia last december with shane and she couldn't remember the words"

Nothin' more i can tell for now.

Ps : Sorry if my english is far to be perfect but i'm from the land of the frogs (aka France)

Thanks for info, MacGee! And no worries about your English - I am not a native speaker either being from this beer paradise in the heartland of Europe. ;)

Some more info regarding the matter (originally posted to PRS forum):

"Cait sang on the original demo of Fairytale pre-Kirsty, aired on the TG4 doc a year or two back, and building to her reunion with the Pogues, she sang the song with Shane last Xmas with the Popes in Dublin after splitting with E. Costello."

If you're from paradise of beers, maybe, you wouldn't be against a few pints of guinness before London's gigs ?

To come back on our subject, here is somethin' new (thanks to the person who posted this answer on Paddy Rolling Stones forum)

"Cait sang on the original demo of Fairytale pre-Kirsty, aired on the TG4 doc a year or two back , and building to her reunion with the Pogues, she sang the song with Shane last Xmas with the Popes in Dublin after spitting with E. Costello.

APD wise decison!"

Now, with my damn cold, i return to bed.

Have a great fridays night, all !

Just give me a lift to London and the tickets for the gig as a bonus and I’m going for it! ;) And even promise to bring you a few pints of the real Czech stuff to gulp in between guiness. ;) Anyway, if you are one of those lucky ones going to the Reunion, have a brilliant time! (And drink a toast to us poor wretches who miss the unique chance). :? Post a review here afterwards to let us know how it all went.

Well, enjoy the weekend and good luck fighting off the cold! :)

It seems that being an ass never goes out of style.
