Most underrated Pogues Album/Song

I caught a small part of the set of some Irish band called "Twelve Sullivans" at this year's Guilfest. The played a rather lame version of Waxie's Dargle which made me appreciate the absolutely WILD version by the Pogues even more. At least, the band had all of the audience without beer on their knees.

I've always found that hearing other groups perform the traditionals The Pogues performed has made me appreciate The Pogues so much more.

I heard a band called "Golden Bough" perform South Australia. They tried hard to make it a rollicing romp but just sounded sad as, in the back of my mind, I heard Terry belting out the lyrics.

I've heard a half dozen groups perform "Waxie's Dargle" and they all end up sounding like dirges.

I credit The Pogues with helping me at sixteen to realize that there was a much broader world of music than I was appreciating, but I also blame The Pogues for ruining all those other Celtic themed bands for me. Thanks a lot guys.

I agree, The Pogues have ruined contemporary Celtic music in general for me because it just sucks when compared to The Pogues. Why listen to this Canadian-Irish band (all 2000 of them) when, well, you can listen to The Pogues?

Well the pogues did not write the original lyrics - think it was written by a first world war poet - but

Sian make the poem alive with such emotion. As with a number of pogues songs (such as dirty old town and navigator) he has made it his own. This song is the most under-rated that they have done and what a fitting song to end rum Rum Sodomy & The Lash on..

I just wonder ehat kind of reception would he get if they ever did it live??

My favourite songs are "lullaby of London", which I sing every evening to my 2 years old son for him to sleep ( and it works !), and the great "Broad Majestic Shannon"

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah. Such a great song and a pretty unexpected thing for the band to have come out with at the time. Its a great one to play when DJing too, slipped in next to "Out on the Floor " by Dobie Gray or something of that ilk.
