Sea Shanty vs. Bottle of smoke

Post Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:59 pm

i haven't held a guitar to it, yet...

but... aren't they the same song? lyrics interchangable...
which, i'm not getting on them for, there's only so many chords.

but.... when i'm singing along in the shower, i always replace the next line.

(note: toilet water has little to no effect on cd's (yea, i know... was prepping hell's ditch, and plunk... right into the bowl)

it's comical, to me.... to listen to roses and then hell's ditch... the difference, to me, amazing...

into the cd player. see the cd player sits on the sink, adjacent to toilet. i had left the seat up, but i did remember to flush the previous usage. see... the spring action on the cd player lid is broken... so there's a lot of fumbling as you're alreading holding the cd. i fumbled. i threw my hand in fast enough, i'm not sure it even had time to sink to porceline. i realized afterwards that it was, thankfully, clean water.

so there's my story... so about those songs....?

I'm not a musician, so I have no idea about notes/chords - but I've never thought those songs sounded the same. The tempo of Sea Shanty is much slower.

The tabs/chords for these song (as well as most other Pogues songs) are easily found online, using Google.

Here's Sea Shanty - Stolen from some tab site:

***SEA SHANTY - by Shane MacGowan
from the albums "Red Roses For Me"

Sea Shanty - as perfomed by The Pogues

C
Dear dirty London in the pouring rain
C F
I wish to God I was back on the sea again
C
Though that belongs to the world of never will be
C F
there was never a wilder bastard than me on the sea

C F
I could fuck all the whores in damnation me boys
C F
Though they wriggled and hollered and made a great noise
C F
Then I'd drink 'til I stank and then drink plenty more
C F
And I won't go down to the sea any more
C F
But if I had ten pounds then I'd raise a loud cheer
C F
And I'd toast all me neighbours both distant and dear
C F
And I'd shoot back great belly-crippling buckets of beer
C F
And a pox and a curse on the people round here
C F
Wouldn't give you the price of a half pint of beer
C F
Wouldn't give you the price of a cup of good cheer
C F
A pox and a curse on the people round here

A man's ambition must indeed be small to write his name upon a shithouse wall
But before I die I'll add my regal scrawl to show the world I'm left with sweet fuck all

And when all of us bold shithouse poets do die
A monument grand they will raise to the sky
A monument made just to mark our great wit
A monument of solid shit now me boys
I met with Bill James we fought over crusts
He called me a whore and I booted his crutch
Then we shared out the jack and we thought it a treat
The compliments pass when the quality meet
The compliments pass when the quality meet
The compliments pass when the quality meet
The compliments pass when the quality meet

Here's B.O.S. From the now defunct vaxxine site:

C
Thanks and praises
F C
Thanks to Jesus
F C
I bet on the Bottle of Smoke
C
I went to hell
F C
And to the races
F C
To bet on the Bottle of Smoke
F
The day being clear
C
The sky being bright
F G
He came up on the left
C
Like a streak of light
C
Like a drunken fuck
F C
On a Saturday night
F C
Up came the Bottle of Smoke

F C
Twenty fucking five to one
C F
Me gambling days are done
F C
I bet on a horse called the Bottle of Smoke
F G C
And my horse won

Am G Am G Am over instrumental part

Stewards inquiries
Swift and fiery
I had the Bottle of Smoke
Inquisitions and suppositions
I had the Bottle of Smoke

Fuck the stewards
A trip to Lourdes
Might give the old fuckers
The power of sight
Screaming springers and stoppers
And call out coppers
But the money still gleams in my hand like a light

Am G Am G Am over instrumental part

Am Am C G Am G Am over other instrumental part

Am G Am G Am over instrumental part

Bookies cursing
Cars reversing
I had the Bottle of Smoke
Glasses steaming
Vessels bursting
I had the Bottle of Smoke
Slip a fifty to the wife
And for each brat a crisp new five
To give me a break on a Saturday night
When I had the Bottle of Smoke
Priests and maidens
Drunk as pagans
They had the Bottle of Smoke
Sins forgiven and celebrations
They had the Bottle of Smoke

Fuck the Yanks
And drink their wives
The moon is clear
The sky is bright
I'm happy as the horses shite
Up came the Bottle of Smoke

***Tabbed by Scotty Anxiety and Aaron

So I think to answer to your question - they certainly share many of the some chords, the instrumentals are different though.
