DzM,
Hope the new server location has a strong fan, because it looks as though this site will be smokin' for the next few months!

The really sad thing is that right now Medusa is running with less RAM and with a slower CPU than she's used to.

Hopefully Server A will arrive soon and I can get things back to normal ASAP.

Medusa and RAM and CPU in one sentence? You talk all crazy. :) Surely you wanted to say: "The really sad thing is that right now Medusa has to live in smaller and less comfortable house than she's used to. Draught under the door, squeaky floorboards, running taps. Hopefully, her old house, which was dismantled and now is being brought to her new place of dwelling, will be built again soon and her life can get back to normal ASAP."

Umm. Yeah. That's what I meant. You're absolutely right. :)

A small update for those of you following along.

We have not yet made progress to the next step. Server A is (as far as I know) still in Oregon, and the people in possession of it are not answering email or phone calls so I have no idea how long it'll be before Server A makes it to me.

Poor Server B is doing its best to stay alive but is struggling under Medusa's weight.

And more small furry woodland animals (mythical and otherwise, I'm certain) are sacrificed on the alter of Plans That Didn't Go Right.

Another small update -

Due to the way AOL does spam blocking and an artifact of the server move, AOL users (and possibly some others at smaller ISPs) are not receving mail from Medusa. This means registration notices, Private Message notices, and Email sent via the fora are lost in the ether.

I'm working to fix this, but for now you AOL guys should complain to AOL about their crap policy of refusing to receive mail from IP addresses without reverse DNS entries. It's a knee-jerk protection that really does little to actually eliminate the spam load. The only way they will consider changing their policy is if their customers complain that it is causing them not to receive legitimate email from the rest of the world.

(tiny side note - I am still, after nearly three years, absolutely delighted not to be getting a paycheck from them)

KThanks!

The saga goes on!

Post Thu Dec 22, 2005 7:44 pm

Update the First: The Reverse DNS issue is resolved. AOL users should now be receving the email notifications they expect. (Note that this has nothing to do with AOL changing their policy - Medusa now has a reverse DNS.)

Update the Second: The people in Oregon that are in possession of Server A have finally got back to me. They claim that Server A will be shipped to me next week. Fingers are crossed.

Welcome back Medusa.

This thirty-two hour outage (approximately 21:00 GMT, Dec 25 through 01:00 GMT, Dec 27) brought to you by Server B locking up hard. Poor sad Server B.

Fingers crossed that Server A is actually shipped to me this week.

Latest update for those keeping score at home:

Server A has (finally!) been shipped to me. Scheduled delivery is tomorrow, Jan 6. I'll take a week or so to refurbish it, and hope to place it in production next weekend or so (sometime on Friday, Jan 13 or Saturday, Jan 14).

Yay!
