Put on a ruffled shirt and light a candle or two thousand for Anne Rice, author of Interview with the Vampire, dead at 80 of complications from a stroke.

Roots Bassist Leonard "Hub" Hubbard, who played on all the band's records between 1992 and 2007, when he was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer (multiple myeloma, for the hardcore cancer fans), which has now taken his life at age 62.

Joan Didion.

A family member just lost their remaining parent and I was recently telling them how I’d picked up her The Year of Magical Thinking off a free book cart after the passing of mine.

True grief is transportive. I don’t recall if I ever finished the book, but the direct attack on the subject of loss and what it does to ones mental faculties while having graceless footing in the present and most thoughts in past memories was quite the subject matter.

Her nephew (Griffin Dunne) produced(?) a documentary about her that I’d planned to watch on Netflix already.

Hello friends,

I used to spend a lot of time on these fine fora but time has led me elsewhere of late. Some long time members may remember I did a travelpogue documenting my visits to three of the 2006 shows on the US tour. My wife Kristen featured prominently in the story. I wanted to share with you that Kristen passed away on August 16 of this year after a five and a half year battle with cancer. She was a few weeks shy of her 50th birthday.

Our sons Aidan (who had a small part in that travelpogue) and Colin and I are doing okay all things considered. Even though I haven’t been on here much, this community always felt like a sort of extended family to me so I wanted to let you know.

Hi Kmurray,

I have to echo Firehazard's comment above; cancer sucks.

I'm very sorry to hear of your family's loss. Best wishes to yourself and the boys.

I'm delighted to see you back, and saddened by the circumstance. I'm very sorry for your loss kmurrey105.

Sad to hear about Janice Long, like her[then] Radio One colleagues John Peel and Andy Kershaw, she championed a lot of bands, solo performers, appearing regularly on her evening/late shows back in the day. There was a great Pogues session from November 1986,which was later included on The Box Set and more recently Pogues at The BBC.

Friends, thank you for the kind words. I stayed away from here in large part because I new there would be a backlog of posts to catch up on and I'd end up spending more time than I had. but That's done with now so hopefully I will be back more often
