2017 - First Fairytale of Christmas

Post Tue Nov 14, 2017 4:10 pm

So, yesterday - Nov 13, in a motel room we had the tv on and caught an episode of the "controversial" show Blackish. Remembrance Day (Canada's veterans day) is Nov 11, so everybody started playing xmas specials immediately. In the episode, Daveed Diggs gives a mixed xmas-songs cd to family as gifts, Track 4 is "a dystopian irish ballad set in a drunk tank", and indeed it's playing through the whole scene.

"You're an ol' gal on junk"
"You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy blaggart" (braggart? whatever)

You know, aside from Ed Sheeran's forgettable vocal performance, i was quite pleased with that version, the stripped down bodhran/fiddle/button accordion accompaniment to the piano/vocal was nice, and the duet partner was good. Going straight into "Jingle Bells" was an... interesting choice.

Left home in a grump this morning, because I'm not SUPPOSED to be working on a Saturday, and I've been sick all week. I hop into a car share, turn the radio to 104.3 FM (Vancouver's "LG Radio, hits of the 60s, 70s, and 80s") and that tell-tale piano intro. My day just got better...

I will not click on the Mouldy Old Dough link. That tune is now running round in my head already. It's something I thought I'd safely forgotten... I will not click it... I will not...
