This is terrible. This is the kind of self-indulgent pap you'd expect from an English 1A student being told to combine a descriptive essay with an interview.

A rugged Irish cottage, night. A fierce and loquacious wind tears, mercilessly, mirthlessly, at the simple thatched roof. An immodest fire illuminates the shadows, boldly. Out of the ashes, a luminous face looms, magnificently. A trembling hand taps a cigarette, certainly, on a filthy trouser leg. Another, equally pale and blackened, grasps a bottle of gin, half full or half empty, depending on which way you look at it. Shane MacGowan, leaning back against the whitewashed wall, contemplates the portrait of Pope John, contemplatively, spits into the flames, contentedly, clears his throat, aridly, and addresses his companion.

—My Uncle John never said much. He'd sit here, belting his cap off his knee, tapping out his pipe. And cursing under his breath.

His companion, Victoria, a fragile, ethereal beauty, the likes of which will never be seen again, nods anxiously and swallows delicately. Shane eyes her, insistently, and continues.

—My Uncle Jim used to get pissed off about how overcrowded it was, because there were fourteen people living in this house and it's a small house, AS YOU CAN SEE.

Victoria glances around the cottage, obediently, and nods her agreement, assiduously.

For the love of God, Victoria! Flowery prose, third person narration, an over-inflated love of your vocabulary. Holy crap...

Yeah, OK. It's likely most of this is meant with a certain melodramatic humor and/or irony, but that doesn't change the fact that it's terrible.

In my humble opinion of course.

Non, rien de rien. Non, je ne regrette rien ...

Tastes differ

As for me the book is worth every penny I spent on it. I've never regretted I bothered to get it, not for a single moment...

It's not about Victoria, her prose and rugged cottages at the end of the day..

The writing style of that would probably have me throwing the book out of the window in the middle of a fit. I already feel like having a shower to get the clingy flowery descriptions away after having read that.

Don't be discouraged with the very beginning of Drink – Victoria's pompous writing might be a bitter pill to swallow, but it's definitely worth clenching your teeth and trying. She has a very specific style – but so does Shane, fortunately (God bless the good editor who persuaded Victoria to write the book in the interview form!). Have you got past Victoria's "flowery" beginning to Shane's stories from Tipperary? The book is an absolutely great read and a must for every Shane's fan. Wait with throwing it out of the window... Or better tell me when you do so, and I'll come to catch it. :)

I think the book was great.

And..

I didn't mind Victoria's outbreaks very much.. Actually i enjoyed them most of the time. Been a while since I read the book though, so perhaps I should not express myself too much about it..

But nevertheless! great book! yessir.

Post Mon Nov 22, 2004 8:23 am

i got it yesterday, and i have read almost a third of it by today, i dont think that i have ever been compelled to read a book that fast before. :P

it really is good, and it explains a lot about shane!

when i was in the shop, they also had another book (called: London Irish punk life and music, Shane Macgowan) by Joe merrick, do you know whether that is any good? coz i'd never heard of that one before, and intend to buy it if it is. :D

It was on the 23rd of June
As I lay blasted in my room
A small bird sang on an ivy branch
And the song they sang was the "Jug of Punch"
