Wow, I haven't listened to that in a very, very long time. A lovely earworm to replace any of several of Grateful Dead tunes that have been firmly lodged in my cortex for the better part of the last 2 weeks...

Lovely. Will be listening to Mr Waits for days now - once you've started, it's hard to stop. Or even to want to stop. 8)

I have to confess that, aside from "Heart of Saturday Night" and "Nighthawks" I didn't know most of Waits' 70s stuff, and there's some great stuff to be had. Holy crap, how come nobody ever told me about "Tom Traubart's Blues"?!

I've had Windmill In Old Amsterdam in my head most of the day.

All I've been able to remember is the chorus, until I googled it just now.

As much as I like the song, I wish the mouse would just go clip clippety clop out of my head, enough now.

Um, you strike me as someone who doesn't need to be told about any sort of music out there. That said, how on earth did that one get by you? I am a big fan of Waits, but not so much of his back catalog (it's alright ... I just prefer his weirder stuff), but watching him perform Traubert's live last October will go down as one of the highlights of music I have been fortunate enough to witness.

I have no idea, but trust me I'm making up for it now. :D

It's interesting, The Pogues have talked about what an influence Rain Dogs was, and you can certainly hear it, but "Tom Traubert's Blues" sounds like a huge influence on "Rainy Night in Soho" and especially "Fairytale of NY" (er, not to mention their take on "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", I'm sure... :D ) I've always imagined Tom Waits doing "Pair of Brown Eyes" and "The Old Main Drag" at the piano, there's clearly a musical communion waiting to happen someday.

"Tom Traubart's Blues" was the first Tom Waits song I ever heard, as it is the first song on side one of the brilliant Small Change album. My dad got it when it came out on a recommendation, and I remember him dropping the needle and my 11 year old mind being blown. I taped the album and made copies for my cooler friends (the open-minded ones that would dig it). 8) Been a fan ever since.

Bruce Springsteen's Swallowed Up (In The Belly Of The Whale)

Woke up with it in my head, after a night of dreams about someone being turned into a fish and then eaten by a swan. No idea what that was all about.

Just to clarify the first line of this post: Bruce Springsteen is not currently swallowed up in the belly of a whale. Or any other creature. To the best of my knowledge, anyway. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Three Is a Magic Number: Bob Dorough and Tears Are Falling: KISS

I read your mind like an open book
You lost the fire in your eyes
You turn to me with those different looks
And then it's raining, looks like it's raining

Oh no, tears are falling
Oh no, tears are falling
Oh no, tears are falling
:D

I have Joe Strummer by The Radiators from Space rattling round in my head.

This is because I went to see Twelfth Night yesterday and Phil borrowed one of the quotes from it for the beginning of the song.
