R.I.P Philip Chevron the music world will be a sadder place without you and Nottingham Forest have lost a truly great fan however your legacy will live on forever with the Pogues.
Along with many other Nottingham Forest fans I am writing to the Club to see if we can play 'Thousands are Sailing' at the next Home Game as a mark of respect.

We'll even climb the pillar like you always meant to. And will watch the sun rise over the strand. Close our eyes and we'll pretend that it could be the same again. REST IN PEACE PHILLIP

The Pogues have asked that this statement be shared:

The news of Philip's death on Tuesday morning, from complications brought about by throat cancer, has hurt us terribly. Philip was first diagnosed with the disease in 2006 and after a gruelling period of chemotherapy which he had fought with such dignity, strength and heroism, he was declared to be in remission. But in a tragic stroke last August he returned from visiting his oncologist with the harrowing news that his cancer had returned, and that this time it was inoperable. It has been no consolation that we have all had months to prepare for the worst; when the worst came, the preparations we had made turned out to be futile, and the impact has been felt very deeply. The hole that his death has left will be huge. He was a remarkable and fantastically talented colleague, but most of all a friend. Our thoughts go out to his fans, who loved him unanimously. But above all, our thoughts are now with his family, with those he held dear and who have held him dear. Philip will be missed terribly and will always be in our hearts. - The Pogues

Last night at band practise we played Thousands Are Sailing. We've probably played it better but then again we've probably played it alot worse! It felt good to play it and i enjoyed it as i always do. When i'd played the last note i had a big smile on my face which then turned into an overwhelming sadness. I never met him, but i feel like i've lost a friend. There will be a big hole in Brixton this December, but we will turn it into a celebration of his life. I wish he was still here but i'm glad he is no longer in pain. I'm sad he is gone but i'm glad i got to experience his music, enjoy his many stories on this forum and see him perform many, many times.

Rest in peace Phil. Thank you for everything.

I was shocked when I received that information on the FOS distribution list. It was always such an affecting moment for me to see him perform Thousands are Sailing live on stage. IISFFGWG was the most important album of my teenage years and Phils voice and lyrics touched me deep inside. His early death is a tragedy, all the best for his family and friends. RIP Phil, I hope you are alright now, wherever you may be.
