An absolutely emotional evening, it was an honour to have been there being part of paying tribute to a brilliant man. Heather, it was so good to see you again. I did look for you in Brogans after. Sorry I didn't make Bowes, but as I explained my flight was delayed and that put everything out.

We didn't end up in Brogan's after the show in the end. I don't know if anyone else went or not, I haven't heard. I would have liked to have gone but Jake hadn't eaten anything and I'd only had half of Christine's sandwich (sorry Christine) so we went on a quest to find food. By the time we'd found something that Jake was happy to eat we were almost back at the hotel so it wasn't worth coming all the way back.

So glad you we met again Julie, even if it was briefly.

This is heartbreaking and yet so uplifting...to listen to this from afar and after the fact is amazing, I cannot imagine what a night it must have been to be there in person.

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this forum, though I have been a Huge fan of The Pogues for about 15 years, since I was a kid.

I just want to drop in to hear what your take on the Phil Chevron Testimonial was?
Did you feel it was fitting (I certainly did!)
Did you think the acts played a blinder, or just blind?

Phil is one of my very own idols as I always admired his work with both The Radiators and The Pogues, not to mention his 'Cool as' style and dapperness, if you like.

For me, It was a great, great celebration of the still life of Phil, and the respect, sadness, wit and warmth was all too beautiful - I thought Damien Dempsey, Declan O'Rourke, Johnny Duhan & Camille O'Sullivan were the highlight for me, But I would like to hear your take on it - If you attended, and you have one?

I don't like Camille O' Sullivan's version of "Lorelei", thought it started out very promising, but I didn't like the way she altered the melody, would have sounded way better if she'd sang Phil's melody, as far as I'm concerned.

She did the same in the O2 Arena at the end of "Fairytale" where it goes "Well So could anyone, you took my dreams from me, bla bla bla". Not cool imho, but apart from that, great performances, I do like her voice.

The one sour note in the evening was Mary Coughlan who did not give Phil the courtesy of learning the words of the song of his that she had agreed to perform, and tried to make a joke of her discourtesy.

I'm no fan of hers either, but I was there and I saw her looking really embarrassed when she forgot the words. OK she made a mistake, everybody does, anyone who has ever performed on a stage has screwed up at some point. The big thing is she was there to support Philip and that she carried on and even encouraged the audience to help her out.

You are absolutely right, Heather. I saw a piece of it on youtube, and it didn't even look bad, but it was just one minute so I dunno. But anyway, I totally don't mind her making mistakes on stage, it's a natural thing to do (look at Shane, although he might be a special case ^^), but I'm just not a huge fan of her voice in general. I remember some performance of "Raglan Road" on a Dubliners 50th anniversary tribute, and her performance was just bad, but maybe it was due to the key in which they played the song. Still great that she was there to support Phil, no doubt about that!

I suppose she does deserve that. But I liked her voice. I can see why Philip chose her to sing Under Clery's Clock.

I thought it was an interesting group of diverse styles, and did not dislike any of the acts. So it was a surprise to me when one of them experienced the heckling from some in the crowd. I know Dublin is a rough audience, but -- come on, he was there at Philip's invitation. the act was for Philip, not the audience.

I loved Declan O'Rourke's Galileo. What a beautiful voice that man has. But I fell apart with his Waltzing Matilda. It was difficult listening to the song and processing what I saw onstage-- Andrew on drums with a guitar on either side, and the rest of the stage empty. The song became a dirge for the Pogues. A fitting one.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Radiators, who looked like they were enjoying playing as much as we enjoyed listening.

Shane looked as if he had been crying along with the rest of us. Thanks to Shane, Andrew, and Spider for being there.

Thank you, Philip, for all that you have contributed to our educations. Your songs will live on in the interpretations of others, and we will continue to debate the appropriateness of taking liberties with the traditional styles.
