Philip, I am very sorry to hear this. There I was reading twitter tonight when the words of thousands are sailing came up, then I found this thread. Your words / poetry and music have and will continue to touch many thousands of lives. Thousands are sailing has been the impetus to much of my achievements in my professional but also personal life.

I can't find words. I will treasure always your visits, the shows, the music, the conversations, and your friendship. Let us know how we can help, if it's possible.

Oh Philip, this breaks my heart. Much love and respect to you, and now might be a good time to say thank you for your generosity here on this forum. You've given us plenty to enjoy on the albums, on stage, and here. So stay strong, stay healthy, enjoy every moment (enjoy every sandwich!) left to you.

And if you fancy a crap new age healer, come see us in Vancouver, the place is lousy with 'em.

many tears have been shed today, and not for the famine...
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

You have been in our thoughts all day. I can only repeat what everyone else has said above. Your immediate family and friends must be the greatest support, but you know that you are loved and respected by so many people besides who have (like myself) only briefly met you. Your generosity and astuteness have given much joy and strength so hopefully some of that joy and strength will bounce back to you. Anything we could do to help, if only.

Much love.

So sad to hear this news. I, like many on here always look forward to reading Mr. C's posts and have come to realize what an great person he is. When the Pogues played Philly in 2007 I had bought tickets and then the show was changed to 21+, I was an 18 year old freshman in college so I messaged Phil to see if there was anything he could do. Promptly told me to get a refund on my tickets and placed two free of charge & aftershows at will call hoping it would work to get me in, and it did. I know that this is one of many many acts of kindness that he was done for countless fans on here, a true rarity for a popular band to reach out that personally to his fans. None of what you have done has been forgotten, beyond the music that we all love you are a great person and I wish you all the best.

Hey, Mr. Chevron, I've lurked the board for ages and always tried to catch you guys when you were in LA.

There ain't much I can say about matters of health and acceptance of death and so forth, but I will say that Thousands Are Sailing reduced me to tears as an impressionable teenager (all of 9 years ago) and made the Pogues my favorite band. I was overjoyed at the reunion tour and moved heaven and earth to make it to the shows, even when I had no money.

I grew up in the age of internet piracy and Napster and rarely bought music back then, but when I heard Television Screen, I paid monstrous amounts of money to hunt down "Ghostown," which has become one of my favorite "lost" classics. The last couple minutes of Faithful Departed still give chills.

Not much to say that's not cliche or eye roll inducing, but thanks for all the great songs, for engaging the fans in a way few musicians do, and being the de facto spokesman for the Pogues and curator of the catalogue. I adored the boxset. You gave the band a soulfulness and sober, intelligent grounding that a lot of people probably wouldn't know was there without you.

You're great and I love your work and thanks for everything. Sounds shallow but hey, I'm just a dude on the internet.

Slainte Philip. You have and continue to inspire many nations. You guys had me when I first saw you, opening for U2 Joshua Tree tour in Foxboro MA ('88?), and Boston was so happy to have you back these last few years in a row for St.Patty's. I still need to bring my kids to a show so you're not done yet! More positive power and love coming your way from My home to yours. God Bless and we'll see you again soon!

Thousands are praying, Philip. I was lucky enough to meet you years back at Brixton. A meeting I will never forget. We spoke of 9/11 when I told you I came from NYC. Your words inspired me the very same way you do through your lyrics and performances. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Mr. C. Get well sir.

I haven't posted here in a while and I know these words are ten a penny online but I'm welling up here. Philip stuck me on the guest list for one of my first Pogues gigs 7 or 8 years ago and I'll never forget it. A charmer of a man and a fucking warrior for what he's gone through.

Not even being a fraction of the wordsmith you ever were I don't have the words to express how much of a pleasure it was to see you do the stuff you did so well but whatever happens you've left such an impact on all of us I'd do a disservice to even try.

Lights might not grow on Christmas trees but they grow in the hearts of every Pogues fan for you big fellah.

Keep the faith. Choinneáil ar an creideamh x
