has anyone seen the video for hurt? i love his version of the song and it was really sad when he died but personally i think it was a bit overdone.

Yeah, I'm a fan of Johnny Cash, and I want to see the film when it comes out.

I didn't get into him till just before he died. He's one of the fathers of rock and roll. I remember seeing a picture of Cash, Atkins, Presley, and Lewis all at a piano..... that was the beginning.

the latest release, 'My Mother's Hymn Book' is fantastic
and seeing how much recognition he had been getting the last few years for his interpretive work, it's easy to forget how great a lyricist he was
"i shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die..."
chilling and thrilling
God bless and my he rest in peace

Anyone else have the new box set? 8) The picture of Strummer with Cash's arm around him is worth the price. There is a look on Joe's face that says "father" "comfort" "Love"... really, you have to see it.

The Man in Black

Post Sun Jan 22, 2006 3:13 am

Johnny Cash-not a country singer, not a rock and roll singer. He was bigger than either one of them. Some of his mid-career stuff is hoaky like "One Piece at a Time" but that shouldn't distract youfrom who he really was or what his best music i.. His true spirit can be found on the 2 prison live disks (Folsom and San Quentin). I think that he did the best version around of Green Green Grass of Home on the Folsom CD. I suppose that Cah go a little stagnant in the 80's and then his record company dropped him (1). However he finished his career off stronger than ever. All of his work that he did with Rick Rubin on American Records is utterly fantastic. The arrangements are spare and Cash's voice is weak and worn but that allows the man's soul to really show through. I have the Cash Unearthed box set and I highly recommend it. His version of Redemption Song with Joe Strummer is simply heartbreaking, espscially now that the two giants are on the sunny side of the mountain. The one tune is probably worth the $70 alone.

glonn -- what about the picture of Cash and Strummer? Am I right? Isn't that the look of total contentment :)
