Streams of Whiskey

Post Thu Dec 13, 2012 12:15 am

Working on deciphering the vocal melody for the verses. Maybe it's because I started playing this song when I was a beginner and I completely fucked it up initially, but it strikes me as an odd little melody. Is this how it goes?

Last night as I slept, I dreamt I met with Behan
E D D ED ED DE D A F#

Seems to jump from the middle D on 'dreamt' to the D an octave above on 'I.' The problem I'm having is figuring out exactly what note he's hitting on the 'with' after 'met.' D sounds good to my ear, but the note is so brief, I can't be sure.

And yes, I'm obsessive.

Shit. Somehow the spacing isn't the same now that it's actually been posted. Lets try this a different way:

[E]Last [D]night as [E]I [D]slept, [E]I [D]dreamt [D]I [E]met [D]with [A]Beh[F#]an

Yeah. Sorry about that. Concurrent spaces and tabs are stripped from HTML before its sent from the server.

Not a problem.

On the off-chance some other poor OCD stricken soul stumbles upon this in pursuit of the same information -- I'm fairly sure it's a B.

Hate to keep reviving a stillborn thread, but 'officially,' according to the 'Pogues Songbook,' it goes like this:

[D5]Last [D4]night [D4]as [E4]I [D4]slept
[F#4]I [D4]dreamt [D5]I [E5]met [D5]with [A4]Be[F#4]han

Not of the opinion that there's any 'correct' way to play a song. Everything's open to interpretation. Been making a study of the Pogues lately, and this one's been driving me nuts. Since my mistakes are on the record, I figured I should correct them on the record.

For those not in the know, the numbers following the notes indicate the octave register. So D5 is an octave above D4. Nothing more.

Can anyone tell me if the tune used for streams of whiskey is Shane's hand, or is it a traditional?

Desperate to find out, and what the tune is called.

Thanks

The tune is by Shane, though it kind of resembles some old Irish melodies a bit. Genius.
