Sziget

Post Sun Aug 12, 2012 10:38 am

There was a review in a dutch newspaper. Had no time for a proper translation so google did it for me..

Of all the nearly 450 bands and artists this week at the Sziget Festival occur, Shane McGowan (54), singer of the legendary folk band The Pogues, by far the most pitiable. The man represents everything that can go wrong with a rock star who can not handle the wealth of fame and loses himself in drink, drink much, maybe a little drugs and again finished with carloads drink.

The man had for many years no more tooth in his mouth, but it seems that he now really a part of his tongue is lost. The "Lullaby Of London" sounded more like a 'Wuwwaby Or Wondon. McGowan goes staggering across the stage and then return to relax on a microphone stand, which he really should keep on his feet. The faster songs are instrumental finished, and the singer a song again can do if the pace is slow enough.

Martel Gang
You wonder why he was a few years ago again with his old band sizes ascended the stage and why they have allowed. Despite the fine musicians on stage is the sight of The Pogues with this singer a torturous process for the singer, the band and also the thousands of people who have taken the trouble to have a look to come and, although many will have done with the question: "Can he get it? '. The answer was unfortunately no.

We saw spectators with a lump in the throat wink away a tear, while McGowan no longer the burned cigarette between his fingers and feel them half pint glass undiluted gin ticking. In the British press last week announced McGowan of The Pogues at the end, he was supposed to quarrel with some band members. This action was therefore all the characteristics of a swansong.

Shocked at this review. They forgot to mention he only has six months to live.

I searched in vain for references to tears and the Famine too. Standards must be maintained. Do it again. 3/10

Instructions to artistes at Sziget Festival (pinned on wall in dressing rooms):

Dear Performers,

For the safety of Sziget Festival's guests in 2012, we would like to ask that you:

- Do not encourage the audience to jump
- Do not aggravate the audience
- Do not encourage the audience to "Crowd Surf"
- Do not encourage the formation of a "Wall of Death"
- Do not suggest or encourage the audience to form a "Circle Pit"
- Do not throw soda bottles, beer glasses, or any other objects from the stage to the audience.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and complete co-operation:

Sziget Ltd.

For a moment, I thought I was back in Vaudeville although, thinking about it, the Wall of Death was more or less de rigeur in those days, along with "Gentlemen, please do not swear backstage, remember there are Ladies present",

LOL...

anyway, crap-article about Shane, nothing new we haven't heard a million times...he was doing very fine in Cologne, yes we all know his life story, so the writer of that pile of shit should Pogue Mahone a little!

by the way Mr. Chevron, hopefully this doesn't come across as being too stupid, but could you explain what exactly a "Wall of Death" is? (I haven't been to many rock-concerts apart from the Pogues, the Dubs [rock?!] and a few others!) Thanks for the great show in Cologne!

Well thankfully we have wikipedia, who list "Wall of Death" as a subsection under "Moshing":

In wall of death, participants are directed away from the center of the standing area by the vocalist of the band until a large, rectangular area is cleared, and, upon the band giving the go ahead, the two sides of the space sprint at each other and collide in the middle. A wall of death, upon collision, creates a large crowd of pushing-moshing, shoving, and sometimes hardcore dancing.

Here's an example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKrGMbRc4NA

(Unless they mean the carnival sideshow "Wall of Death": featuring a silo- or barrel-shaped wooden cylinder, ranging from 20 to 36 feet (6.1 to 11 m) in diameter, inside of which motorcyclists, or the drivers of miniature automobiles, travel along the vertical wall and perform stunts, held in place by centripetal force.. Philip, you ever encouraged the crowd to pull one of those from the stage? )

The Dutch article sounds rather like yellow press.

Contrary to the contents of this article, I was contacted by a photographer who sent me a comment (and even pictures as proof) regarding my review on the concert. He said that my review gives a false impression that Shane 'has got over his illness'. The only thing I wrote on this was my remark about a bottle of mineral water that appeared at some point in the concert in front of Shane (didn't watch though whomever this bottle belonged to), and my speculation that he might drink less than before. Anyway even if it was filled with gin, Shane clearly looked better than in 2003 when he played the Sziget with the Popes, and wasn't able to stand on the stage.

By the way my nose is still running not because of any "Wall of Death", but inhaling too much dust and dirt. Did anyone else attend this concert?

Festivals banned these spectacles after the Roskilde tragedy which was a bit less funny thing than what you see on this video. I think any responsible person who has ever experienced being in a dense mass of people, and after a point having absolutely no control even on their own movements (especially when someone falls down and unable to stand up again), would never command the audience do this.

It is taken very seriously here too, since last year 3 people died in a human crush that occurred in a staircase of a concert venue in Budapest.

I think the point is, never, in 30 years, have The Pogues "commanded" or even "suggested" that our audiences do this stuff, nor do I personally know of ANY band who would. If such bands exist, they should be ostracised at all costs. Pogues audiences have always been tenacious, accomplished and self-policing groups at whom I constantly marvel. Only once in all those years - at Wembley Arena - have we had the slightest real trouble, and that occurred because, while the fire officers were too busy setting fire to our stage set to make sure it was fireproof, the security barriers in front of the stage, which might have well served Barry Manilow, remained grotesquely inadequate to our needs, a plea that went ignored by Wembley's "experienced" security people. Though it always pains me to air the fact afresh, myself and Darryl were at Hillsborough.
