DzM, you make it all sound so simple. :)
Good luck, and be careful on the road.

02:00 on Thanksgiving Day Update (Because I know you people are just one the edge of your seats waiting for this stuff):

I am midway through Step (1). Already the Unicorns are extinct. There will be no rainbows.

But I've fixed most of those problems and all is moving forward. Server B will be brought online (hopefully) Sunday evening Pacific Time. On Monday the dynamic aspects of Medusa will be locked on Server A and DNS records will be updated to start pointing you at Server B. If, come Tuesday afternoon, things still look locked to you then it's because DNS changes are taking a long time to propagate. Give it some time.

Fingers and toes crossed.

Oh the disappointment! I was looking forward to them.

Good luck with the rest of it, DzM. Difficult, this typing with fingers crossed.

FYI: If you are reading this message then you are now happily experiencing Step 4. Congratulations. I hope the journey from Server A to Server B was as much a joy for you as it was for me.

Ah brilliant, DzM, you are plainly a genius not only with site janitoring but also with careful driving. Very many thanks, we just would not know what to do without Medusa. Can I uncross my toes now, they're getting numb.

But wait... What's that I see over there? A unicorn! And another! By God, they're procreating!!! And I feel a slight rain coming on, perhaps a rainbow? I think the magical world might be returning!
“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.

Toes may be un-crossed, and thank you for the effort.

Oh, believe me the unicorns and fluffy bunnies are long dead. I've just shielded you from the experience of watching their blood soak into the thirsty sand dunes.

Also - pity the poor Pogues fans still hitting Server A and getting this message:
Server A wrote:Please note: The fora are currently closed for maintenance. How long the fora are unavailable to you will depend on your Internet serice provider DNS caches, but the total process should not take longer than a day or so.

Don’t get me wrong: We are now "happily experiencing Step 4" – out of 9. A bit premature to organize fireworks and summon the ghosts of unicorns and bunnies, isn’t it? Wouldn’t it be more useful to further keep the toes crossed in solidarity with poor Medusa who dwells in her cold, uninviting temporary home? :)

Btw, if the poor bunnies and unicorns had to romp on sand dunes, with not a leaf of lush green grass in sight, maybe it was merciful that they met such fate as they did...

For those of you following along at home; the latest update:

We are now in the midst of Step 5, but with a minor modification. Server A was unplugged both from The Internet and from AC power at 10:00am Pacific time this morning. It has gone from being the proud home of Medusa to an expensive boat anchor filled with many hazardous chemicals.

My provider in Portland will now ship Server A to me (saving me the road trip). This may result in a spiffy looking box arriving on my doorstep with many expensive crunchy things inside it, or it may arrive as an intact computer. Time and the shipping gods will tell.

Then we move on to Step 6.

Nothing other than "be patient." DNS changes can take a while to propagate to the rest of the world. Sometimes as long as a week depending on how your ISP has their server configured.

Good luck with that.

Wish I could. Unfortunately my day job also requires some of my time. Thanks for thinking of me though.
