BBC - What's so great about the Pogues

Post Mon May 30, 2011 6:03 pm

In case you're wondering "what's so great about the Pogues", the BBC is here to give you the answer:

"Lenny Henry never quite got The Pogues. From the fist time he saw the band on the TV in the 80's, with the singer banging a tray on his head during a drunken reverie, they have mystified this Luther Vandross fan. He goes on a journey of enlightenment through Poguedom speaking to musicians, the former manager, music critics and die hard fans to gain a better appreciation of this unmissable London Irish band. He explores the romantic and brutally realistic poetry of Shane McGowan and summons up the raw energy of their live performances as he asks - what's so great about The Pogues?"

Broadcast: Sat 4 Jun 2011, 10:30, BBC Radio 4

Well, he made a bit of a dick of himself along the way but was won over in the end. Didn't know the pogues were "defunct" though. Can't beat good research. It's on radio 4 listen again for a week for anyone that missed it.

I thought it was ok....as far as I remember he never actually spoke to a member of the band. Pretty orthodox in its approach, but hell, it is The Pogues at half ten on a Saturday morning on Radio 4!

That was a good listen.

What I liked was they way Lenny said he couldnt have imagined going through the 80s banging a tray on his head screamin "whatllya have .... I'll have a pint" etc

Thankfully both entertainers went their own way, and their course was charted accordingly and we never saw Shane on Tiswas chucking foam flans around, impersonating David Bellamy and saying OOOOOOOOOOKAAAAAAAAAYY for as long his lungs would allow........

..... a jobs a job though :)

....and of course, Mr Henry has since gone on to give us a very creditable Othello, among other things.

OK OK !!!!!

I was just trying to inject a little levity here - the theatrical accomplishments of Mr Henry and many others are way way above my intelect Mr C.....

The antics of the Phantom Flan Flinger, DJ Delbert Wilkins and Trever MacDoughnut are not

This Lenny Henry Fellow doesn't seem to understand the genius that this band is. I mean, it was a good listening, talking to all those musicians, journalists, etc. ... quite enjoyable...but why does he call Shane's vocals "weird singing style"? Sounds very negative to me...Shane's singing is unique, one of the greatest and most original and innovative singers alive. What's so great about the Pogues? Just listen, man.

Radio 4 is developing a healthy obsession with the Pogues.

As well as Lenny Henry and viewtopic.php?f=24&t=11463 there was trailer just before this evening's 6 o'clock News with the first few bars of Dirty Old Town. I thought the mouth organ sounded like the Pogues, subsequently confirmed by Shane's dulcet tones.
