While Wikipedia is notorious for being off the mark at times, it can have it's uses. A point in case is the general perception of " Thousands are sailing ". It is described simply as an" Irish folk style ballad ". While this may not be entirely accurate, it is much closer than the guff and nonsense spouted by it's author. " Music hall pastiche ", or something like that, is how he describes it. Right !

Here I will do what Chevron does. He would proceed to tell me what not to say in reply. So, DON'T, anybody, start saying how ridiculous it is to tell the author of a song what kind of music it is. He was trying to deny the " Irish roots " of the Pogues's music and banish any notion of his own song having any Irish influence in it at all, despite it being about Irish immigrants to the US, coffin ships, Brendan Behan and JFK etc. One lily-livered poster on here bowed his head, genuflected and pleaded forgiveness for stupidly having thought it was an Irish folk style ballad, when, in fact, that's what MOST people would describe it as. There is something about Wikipedia that ive never trusted. Ever since A) it told me there was an episode of Whatever happened to the likely lads that I hadnt seen wich in the end didnt exist and B) I found my Dad updating a page on Mario Lanza.
