I agree with your version.
Because I'm not native in English, I copy-pasted the lines to my post from http://www.pogues.com/Releases/Lyrics/L ... yMorn.html.
No matter the version, that part describes the loneliness so well.

There are a lot of my favorites throughout this thread, but one I might have missed or has been missed is the following:

While over in Ireland eight more men lie dead
Kicked down and shot in the back of the head

It's something about the violence of the line along with the rhythm of how those words come out - the hard consonants adding to the violence of the lines. It shocked me the first few times I listed to the album, and it struck me at the time how brilliant it is to find just the right words and phrasing in song to give a little more brutality to the piece.

I seem to remember Shane got a bit of stick in the music press over these lines at the time. The " eight more men lie dead " refers to the massacre at Loughall, in the north of Ireland, where an eight man IRA unit was ambushed and all shot by " security forces ". The argument in the English press was that these men were " hoist by their own petard " so to speak, unlike the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four who were completely innocent men and women, arrested simply for being " Irish in the wrong place and at the wrong time ". Maybe they had a point, I don't know. Shane might argue that the fact there even IS, or WAS, an IRA was as a result of British involvement in Ireland for centuries which brought about ALL the suffering, atrocities and miscarriages of justice and so those lines in question could be said to be justified. Either way, they are great, visceral lines that really hit home.

Rainy Night in Soho

I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways

Always makes me think of My Wife :D

I've been known to phone The Lovely Mrs. DzM this song is being performed at shows. I like to think I'm being all romantic and stuff. Sadly when I get home I often hear from The Lovely Mrs. DzM "You called me at 10:30. I couldn't tell what was going on. The sound was blown all to hell. I hung up. You should stand farther away from the speaker stacks." Of course the only reply that makes any sense at all is "WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU! TINNITUS!"

Try taking The Lovely Mrs. DzM with you to the show next time. Trust me it is way more romantic.
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

I'm sure this is true, but I'm left wondering how many times has Clash Cadillac taken The Lovely Mrs. DzM to a show?

By this stage in the thread its pretty clear that as a whole, Rainy Night, wins hands down! What a song, pure poetry1 I always make people check this or London you're a Lady out when anyone questions Shanes writing abilities!

London You're A Lady isn't really my favourite Shane lyric. Rainy Night may be.

That's the best one!

Lately I like this from the Dark Streets Of London

"Then the winter came down and I loved it so dearly
The pubs and the bookies where you'd spend all your time
And the old man that were singing
When the roses bloom again
And turn like the leaves
To a new summertime"
Finally found a place they could never reach...

London You're A Lady is probably my favorite Pogues song for lyrics in general, but I've been listening a lot lately to Waiting For Herb, and I really like this bit from Paris St. Germaine:

"My heart is too empty to speak true of sorrow,
What's dust is but dust and as dust shall remain.
If only I could I would make a tomorrow,
Make a tomorrow where you'd live again."
