To me, a " cover " is when somebody or some group does a song that was written by somebody else. WHEN the song was written has nothing whatsoever to do with it, it's still a cover version of somebody else's song...

I have to say that basically I'd agree with that. I've seen much tighter definitions, but it seems to me that a cover is a cover.

Was I ? I honestly can't remember. But yeah, I was merely pointing out that if people have nothing to contribute then they don't have to, you know ? There's no need to come on saying how this is shit and that is crap and this that and the other. If you don't want to watch, then switch channels. Easy as that.
Another thing about covers. I think somebody said that it matters whether the song was a hit, or was well known at least. That has nought to do with it. It didn't matter a damn whether the public at large knew the original " Police and thieves " or not. The fact is, it wasn't written by Joe and Mick, or The Clash themselves. Therefore, it was a cover version. Also, as somebody else seemed to imply, it doesn't matter that their version was significantly different from the original ( kinda saying that it was so different that it was almost an entirely new track ). That surely is the whole point of doing a cover, that you put your own spin on it, so to speak, that it isn't just a slavish, carbon copy of the original. Sid's My Way is a perfect example. He put his own distinct mark on the thing, but it is most certainly still the same song, still " My Way" by Anka and whoever, can't remember off hand.

dsweeney, if you can't disagree without resorting to personal attacks then just don't post. Thanks. -- DzM
