I would love to see a show there. I wanna visit Hitsville, U.S.A. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a decent place to stay in Royal Oak and humping it up to Birmingham and right back to Royal Oak didn't appeal to me so much. I believe it's $33.00 to take Amtrak from Chicago to Royal Oak. That show is going to be some fun. :D

Some of us went to Hitsville on a 1987 trip.

No flies on you. 8)

I was reading http://www.soulfuldetroit.com/web01-soulfuldetroit/jmm2.htm. Anytime The Temptations movie is on television I have to watch it. So I loved seeing two Johnnie Mae Mattthew's locations on the site. Damn those people were/are cool.

Would anyone care to elaborate on "Terminal 5?"
I can find it on a map, but, lets just say....as compared to Roseland or Nokia?

Hey Dave, I've never been there for a show, took a stroll past last week when I was in the city. It's on the West side, Hell's Kitchen, few blocks away from all the Holiday madness. I would say walking distance from Roseland. Of course if you don't mind walking about 7 NYC blocks.

Found some reviews here.....

*gotta say i'm feeling a little trepidation after reading the reviews!

Not in love with the Terminal 5... but what can you do? I'll just deal with it.

Well, there's two ways of look at it. Terminal 5 is either, of course, in the historic Irish-American district of Hell's Kitchen, right next to the docks made famous by Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront or, alternatively, slightly awkwardly positioned just the "wrong" side of Lincoln Center and thus a little awkward for mass transit. So walk!

Incidentally, it's sometimes forgotten that Lincoln Center is built on the site where Bernstein/Sondheim/Robbins' West Side Story takes place. The slums had already been razed, just, by the time the show opened.

I live here in Hell's Kitchen, and saw the New Pornographers at Terminal 5 a couple of weeks ago. Personally, I like it a lot less that the Roseland. It is a lot smaller generally, and more narrow in particular. Size and shapewise, it's comprable to the Bowery Ballroom. Coming in the door brings you to the front of venue, and the only bar I saw on the first level is right inside that door, so there's a ton of congestion as soon as you get inside.

There is also a second level, in the form of a U shaped balcony, where getting a drink was much easier. Unfortunately, there's not much room along the balcony, and one side is reserved as a VIP area.

Smoking area is on the roof - it was kinda cool up there.

Soundwise, I was not all that impressed. Granted, I was listening to glorified adult contemporary, but I had heard from friends that the sound was not great at shows they had been too, either.

In terms of nearby bars, there is not much that I know of very close. McGee's is at 55th and 8th/B'way, Druid's is 51st and 10th, DJ Reynolds at 57th/9th. I'll vouch for all of those.

If you walk up 54th Street ,to the venue, you'll find the Colbert Report. (513 W)
To the left of that, at the corner of De Witt Clinton Park, is the Daily Show studio. (733 11th Ave @ 52nd)
Walking up 55th you'll find the reopened Soup Kitchen International. (259 W 55th St @ 8th Ave)

I realize that these are all television references.

All depends on your stamina and fondness for city rambles. I would consider 30th Street to the Hudson a brisk walk, though I certainly would not be surprised to learn that other people felt it was a subway or taxi ride away.

From where you are staying at 30th/Madison, it's a 2.5 mile walk to terminal 5. Also, you can take the N, R, or Q train from Herald Square (34th/Broadway) to 57th Street and walk from there (a little over half a mile).
