Will THE POGUES ever play Canada again?I,like most of my compatriots have spent fortunes to see the band play in the USA and in one case in Moscow!Surely us REAL North Americans deserve at least one gig....anywhere.

Apparently, you need to have a word with your Revenue people. It has become impossible for us to combine dates in Canada with dates in the USA and still make economic sense of a tour, because the witholding tax in Canada is something you spend the rest of your career trying to make up. We never know from one tour to the next whether there is any more career, and for that reason, we cost each outing on a tour-by-tour basis, literally dividing up the profits at the end. The Revenue costs on just two or three Canadian shows can completely collapse the economics of a North American tour, because the profit margins on any tour are based, almost always, on what's left after all the travel and production costs are taken into account. A tour can be unprofitable until (literally) the last show or couple of shows, and that's when we get paid: the margins can be dauntingly tight. We are incorporated in the United States, so our Tax in the US is a temporary measure, later taken into account in our UK earnings. Apparently, Canada does not have a comparable system which would be compatible with our needs.

That's what happened a few years back when we announced (on here) and cancelled Canadian shows in the space of less than an hour. The Canada shows had to be hastily removed when our accountants looked at the tour figures.

That said, nothing would give us greater pleasure than to do some shows in Canada. But we can't afford to make a loss on any of our tours.

Mr. Chevron -
Is it pointless for us near the great city of Philadelphia to continue to request a visit from you and the boys?
It seems as if there are issues beyond our power to persuade you to make this happen.
Either way, my New Years resolution has already been made for 2011.
I will see the Pogues live in the coming year by any means necessary.
....and for that I am grateful.

another request for philly. I heard that last year we were passed by because
sales weren't good enough the year before - don't know if that's true.
but skipping Philly two years in a row? As was mentioned above, we did
put out a very decent showing when that freakish storm hit the year before.

Philly in the snowstorm remains a cherished memory. There are numerous factors which favour one venue/city over another when our agents are booking our tours. The main factors are routing, venue availability on specific days and, yes, prior box office returns. If we specify a desire to play a particular city or town, it can easily make a difficult job impossible for our agent. There is never any snub intended.

Hi Phil !

Just out of curiousity... Is that easier in Europe with all the different countries and all the tax regulation ? I heard, that here in Germany foreign sportsmen/women and artist who perform here, have to pay a special tax.

Take care !

Yes, there's a witholding tax in Germany too, but it's a little easier to absorb into tour costs if you are doing a multi-nation tour.

Gee, all this talk about taxes, and Canada's being too burdensome. Me thinks the USA will be heading that way all too soon as well..... better enjoy this show while it's still affordable....

Nothing the matter with taxes per se. The difficulty arises when they try to take them from you before you've earned them, which is what witholding taxes amount to.
