One thing I'd like to add, is I'm really enjoying writing the play I've started to write, and I think that I am going to enjoy the course, a lot. I've read through the course notes and they seem to have everything covered. There are even going to be online discussions and debates with fellow students, which I'm looking forward to.

I think I may have finally found something that I am quite happy to do for a living and won't give up on so easily when the going get's tough.

25 Years ago today an IRA bomb exploded at the Grand Hotel Brighton. This was significant because the Conservative Party members and cabinet were stopping at this hotel while they held their annual conference in the Town. 5 people died in the bombing and many were injured, The PM at the time Margaret Thatcher escaped unhurt and although the bomb went off at 3.00am in the morning she continued with the conference at 9.00am in defiance to the IRA.

Today I got my dog back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband gave up my girl when we seperated...the new owners were super cool...but it didn't work out.

Today, I posted my first play off to the evermanplayhouse.

Feels like the end of an era, but hopefully it'll be the start of a new one. The worst that can happen is that they'll send it back with some positive feedback,

My son aged 10, has been choosen to play Peter Pan at his theatre group out of about 30 children, proud Dad syndrome for me

Today I got my first rejection letter (of sorts) from the Liverpool everymanplayhouse.

It was basically a load of comments about the play sent them and how they could only produce a limited number of scripts each year and also they already have a number of projects scheduled for the unforseeable future due to the closure of the everyman for refurbishment next year. This is how it ended:

I'm not sure this is right for us at the moment and therefore not be able to make a commitment to producing your work in the future. However, we will inform you of any future events that may be of interest.

Once again, thank you for sending us the play and I do hope you find the right home for your work soon.

Anyway, down but not out. I have a number of other ideas for plays to write in future, one of which I'm currently in the process of writing. I will be looking for other opportunities and other theatre companies to send my work to and, when I'm ready, I'm going to send the everymanplayhouse another play.

Having read through the letter a few times now, I think they may have been considering accepting it as one of the lines earlier on it the letter reads:

We felt that the characters were recognisable and there is a great deal of potential in the vivid world you portray.

I've been considering my options all evening and I have a book, which has been very useful and will continue to be I'm sure called So You Want To Be A Playwright by Tim Fountain. It has some very useful information in it and the appendix gives information on key theatres for new writing, organisations for playwrights and various other useful information which I'll be taking into consideration over the coming weeks, months and years. I am determined that I will make it one day.

Sounds like you got a well-considered and respectful response from them, which will not, unfortunately, be the case with every rejection letter. Remember too, that when a theatre company tells you something like "it's not right for us at the moment", that's usually exactly what they mean, because theatres programme with a theoretical overarching criterion in mind, which helps them narrow the field. Even the most established and admired playwrights have to get accustomed to rejection - at Dublin's Abbey Theatre alone, every single 20th/21st century playwright of note has had a play turned down, and it would be impossible for the theatre to even consider mounting more than a fraction of the work submitted. Among the rejects was, of course, Sean O'Casey's The Silver Tassie, in 1928, but it has survived such a brutal fate and even gone on to have three Abbey Theatre productions - in 1935, 1972 and 1990.
