don't remember,
but it raised more than just a few eyebrows around me,
and on stage too, if I saw correctly,
and rightly so !!

Strange kind of humor indeed. I always wondered why they didn't leave his "Merci beaucoup! Sieg heil! and... - romance!" on the cutting room floor for the DVD release of Montreux '95 with the Popes.

What a brilliant concert! Thank you very much for this wonderful show!

It was my second ever Pogues-gig and it was probably even better than Brixton Academy last December.
I was right in front of Shane with my "little" brother, it was his first Pogues-Live-Experience and he was blown away (he usually listens to other kinds of music).

And no, Shane didn't do the "Sieg Heil"-Führergruß. He just threw his arm in the air with a closed fist like Nelson Mandela. It was between Fall From Grace and Broad Majestic Shannon, I've
got it on picture and video as well.

This is the one, you can't see the formed fist, but it certainly wasn't a Hitlergruß: http://img10.myimg.de/1918839m3t1w564h3 ... 8465a8.jpg

Even if it would have been, so what? "Merci Beaucoup, Sieg Heil, Tschau and Romants"

Top night, love you eight guys, hopefully I get the chance to see you again, maybe in London this christmas?!

Btw: One tiny disappointment was the fact that they didn't play Lullaby of London, one of my favorite songs ever. But you can't have it all...

Brilliant show, Cheers!!!

Usually it's one of the easiest ways to get in trouble with German police, because it's a "forbidden symbol".
Even a crossed out "Hakenkreuz" as a clearly recognizable sign of protest against nazis has already brought some people before the court here, which is bloody stupid, of course, but hey: it's still a land of law & order!
That's why I was wondering about the fact they haven't censored the above mentioned Montreux DVD at least for the German release.

If this was a land of law and order, people like Adolf Sauerland would be in jail right now, rightly so. But it isn't really...

anyway, Shane didn't do the Hitlergruß, but I believe he said "Ich liebe dich" after Fall from Grace. Sounds like that on video my father made .... and Spider laughing his arse off.

Good times

he didn't indeed, but then nobody said he did,
but he did dedicate a song to Hitler,
and as much as I like the Pogues,
that seemed somewhat out of order
In heaven I met my Maker, I told Him a few jokes
we also sang some songs, He even liked The Pogues

Really? I didn't get it, probably because I was quite drunk when the Pogues started...do you know on which one he did it?

Well, personally, I don't have a problem with that. I'm sure it did upset a few people, but I can't really see the problem. I had a discussion on this forum about Shane's infamous "Merci Beaucoup, Sieg Heil..." on Montreux 1995 DVD. Seriously, there are so many delicate and serious issues and topics that are made fun and jokes off..and Shane was probably pissed when he said it. It's more a kind of "self-insult" or "self-abuse" if Shane dedicates a song he wrote to a guy like Adolf Hitler....anyways...excuse the mediocrity of my English grammar and don't start on this whole shite again like the last time I said that I thought Shane's comment on the DVD was quite funny...Peace and Love!

I've read somewhere it was normal for the punks in england (where shane belonged to) back in the end of the 70's used to wear swastika's and make provocative jokes about nazi's to shock people. It was one of the subjects used to shock people and not really meant to be racist or something. Keith Moon did the same thing by riding around London in his cabrio Bentley standing straight, wearing his ss uniform, making the Hittlergruss.
I have to admit I felt shame the first time I saw Shane doing that, coming on stage with his right hand rased and greeting the audience with: Gutten abend meine kinder. But on the other hand it had something funny too. I know this kind of behaviour is frowned upon in Germany (in the Netherland, by the way, too) but I believe we shouldn't make this big deal about it.
I believe we should make more jokes about this particular area. If we can't make fun of it we make room for taking it seriously and I hope in this day and age the whole nazi regime couldn't be taken seriously.. I hope you'll understand what I mean by that..

I'd rather hear him dedicate a song to Oliver Cromwell next time then,
but these are my last words on the topic,
the small incident should not dominate discussion over an otherwise great show

Shane has, allegdly said things in the past, which have often been taken out of context,or just had his words twisted by the gutter press. In an interview in the NME,over 10 years ago he said something about MEL B aka Scary Spice,i don't recall anyone accusing Shane of being a racist and of course he isn't,no matter what he might have said in the past.Just as well the US band Elvis Hitler never toured Germany, now i wonder why that was...?

This was only available at the venue
you could just look for it on the usual internet sites where such things are sold
