Dont know never asked him,All im saying do you think it gets a bit boring for the fans knowing that you are gonna play more or less the same set inm the same order every single year.Dont take this as a critiscm it just that you have a hell of a lot of good songs that you continue to leave out which Im sure the fans would love to hear.

Aha! Well you see, "do you think it gets a bit boring for the fans" is a different question, wouldn't you agree? Dunno. When you get the First Folio version of the "To be or not to be" speech but it is located where the Bad Quarto has it, does that work better for you or not?

I think the real answer is we wouldn't begin to second guess the fans, so we have to please ourselves and hope for the best. We've never disguised our desire to trawl through our songbook a bit more than we do, but nor have we ever found a satisfactory solution to the problem of getting Shane to appear for rehearsals.

Its unanswerable really. I would love the guys to do different songs from their wonderful backlog but then again Id be gutted by anything that would have to be omitted. I remember the first time they did 'Kitty' in the reunion shows a few years ago I was absolutelty made up. That said the main enjoyment of the gig is just turning up and enjoying the songs whatever the weather. I imagine if they turned up and didnt do Sally Mac, fall from grace, pair of brown eyes, dirty old etc etc there would be up roar

The reality is that a fair percentage of the xmas shows attendance fall into the fairytale/"best of" familiar audience, especially the increasingly younger fans including my 16 year old daughter attending her first pogues gig (Brixton 19th) they expect the up tempo classics, for the fans who have grown up with the band like this old git veteran of fourty something pogue induced hangovers, if shane could be persuaded, a couple of lower profile "interesting"venue gigs would allow the band to dust off some of the hidden gems lurking in their back catalogue, economics and enthusiasm permitting. cheers for the great show saturday!!

Having watched the band over many years & christmas times I also sometimes think "what it would be like if the set was changed a bit"? In all fairness it's a greatest hits package which appeals to everyone. Sure I could be selfish and ask for songs from Red Roses & Rum Sodomy but what appeal would that have to everyone else?
As stated if songs like Sally Mac, Thousands are Sailing, If I Should Fall (as RichB points out) were omitted then it would piss someone off.
Having watched the Saw Doctors 2 nights before The Pogues last week, they do exactly the same, crowd pleasers. Ok they may have chucked a couple of new songs in but we know that isn't going to happen with the Pogues.
Christmas is a Pogues concert, the charts at Christmas are only complete when fairytale hits the top 20
One point: Instead of freezin my chestnuts off each year what about some Summer dates??

If the band ever did decide to hang up their gloves I will be the one asking myself why I didnt go to more gigs to hear the same songs. All these songs are ingrained in your soul or they are not, which is why songs such as Broad Majestic Shannon and Lullaby of London are like fine wines . . . .they getter better with age indeed the whole show does.

I didnt see one degree of apathy on this tour from any audience where I attended, there are thousands of fans around the world who never even get close to the chance of seeing the band live never mind bitching about the cost/ content of the show.

Wherever the Pogues may be in 2010 playing the same set I will try my damndest to be there. Try enjoying it - get down the front with the fans.... or have a year off that way you will never have to suffer a predictable gig again. God's sake.

I see the Saw Doctors on a fairly regular basis, and while they sing about ten songs every single show, they really mix up their set-list, at least when compared to the Pogues. It isn't exactly like Bruce Springsteen, who will play over 100 different songs on a tour, but uit shows what easily can be done. Having said that, my FIRST Pogues concert in October, was, from where I sat, perfect.
Guess it all depends on your point of view.
